This agreement is internationally important because the maritime border runs through a large natural gas field that could not be developed due to the border dispute. Now that it has been agreed, both Israel and Lebanon can develop this resource. Over half of the gas will be shipped to Europe and will replace a small but meaningful percentage of Russian gas. Although negotiations over the border have been ongoing for years, the war in Ukraine made the resolution a matter of urgency and was the impetus for the US involvement.
