How have I not heard of this? Well, anyway, congrats to competent foreign policy. More, please.

BINGO!! All their talk about “support for Israel” is only about the christianists wanting a front-row seat for Armageddon and watching “The Jews” get either slaughtered or converted to (christianists’ version of) Christianity. (Although I suppose ‘sticking it to’ Muslims and other ‘brown people’ is an added bonus positive externality.)

It’s clear that for them [Republican’ts], support for Israel’s security is more about their own partisan political benefits than the actual policy benefits for Israel. And so they stay silent. (emphasis added)

Competent foreign policy is more about substance than show. That’s why many of the really significant deals fly under the radar during the time they happen, only to be recognized as such years or decades down the line.

Let’s hope that with Bibi out of the picture, the Israeli government will recognize that allying or interfering with American politics on behalf of the Republican party is a losing proposition.

Most of the American public does not seem to care about the rest of the World and the MSM mainly seems to agree.
Even Canada appears off limits to many.

Hypocrisy is annoying because Jesus Christ was against it in His Own Words. But the Republicans’ policy ideas would be just as bad if they were all squeaky clean, milk drinking Eagle Scouts in the fake tradition of Mike Pence’s persona.

Mainstream media takes its cues from the Republican Party. And, as Joel Rubin noted above:

… Republicans know that Joe Biden has just secured an historic win for Israel’s security, which costs them politically. It’s clear that for them, support for Israel’s security is more about their own partisan political benefits than the actual policy benefits for Israel. And so they stay silent.

And, right on cue, so does the mainstream media.

As goes the GOP, so goes CNN, ABC, CBS, Fox (of course), Newsmax (ditto), NBC (albeit to a somewhat more balanced extent), and so on.

Hell, I only heard about it because WaPo covered it back on the 11th, and Max Boot opined on the ensuing silence four days ago.

Max Boot had a column in the Washington Post the other day praising the agreement saying that it’s far more consequential than the Abraham accords because Lebanon has been a hostile entity against Israel for six decades while the Gulf states haven’t.
For American Jews Israel barely registers in the top ten of concerns since Israel can fend for itself quite well.
I reside in an area that sent a fair number of young people to Iraq. Many of them and their families not only blame Bush and Cheney for the lies that got them embroiled there, they also rightly blame Bibi hence some of the perceived lack of support for Israel.

While to some extent it is true, I disagree with this overarching statement from the article in regard to Republican opposition to this breakthrough in Middle East peace:

“The reason for this, of course, is clear: Republicans for years have tried to use Israel policy as a political wedge to pry American Jewish voters away from Democrats. For them, supporting a pro-Israel agreement negotiated by a Democrat would undermine their political argument to Jewish voters, and so they reject it.”

I think the reason many Republicans oppose this agreement is they are ARMAGEDDONISTS and oppose peace in the Middle East.

For example, I remember an interview with Jerry Falwell and a supporter that was aired on 60 Minutes in the aftermath of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. They, Falwell’s supporter, with Falwell standing next to her nodding in agreement, said “God struck down Rabin for trying to bring peace between Jews and Arabs contrary to God’s plan for the return of his son and what the bible says will follow.”

So well I agree some Republicans may oppose the deal because while it is good for America and the world it is bad for them politically, many Republicans to include the Republican base oppose the deal for even more sinister and bat shit crazy reasons then mere political expediency.

Right?

Speaking of bat shit crazy, where has Michele Bachmann been hiding? She was really big on the Rapture and maranatha, but I haven’t heard anything from her, even here in Minnesota.

Thanks for what I’ll call corroboration! :+1:

Rightists look so righteous in the mirror they don’t think their photo even looks like them. Support for Israel is one more example.

My thoughts exactly! Seriously, I haven’t heard a peep about this. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I can’t get the website to quote the part of your comment I like the best, so just let me say generally that I think you make a really good point. I agree that they are armaggedonists. :frowning:

If Biden’s lips are moving he’s calling out GQP hypocrisy. It’s that easy.

I did not hear of this either, not from the top 3 on MSNBC (Chris, Alex and Lawrence) or on I24 news. OTOH it explains why the Orange POS suddenly spewed his anti-semetic rant (not that the bast*rd needs a reason to spout racist crap).

The quote is from my memory watching 60 minutes and is probably not found or confirmed on a website. I do remember the title of the segment was "Zion’s Christian Solider’s and it was broadcast around 2002 and either Bob Simon or Lesley Stahl was the corespondent.

I bet if you just google something like “yitzhak rabin and armageddon” or “what rabin’s assassination says to evangelicals” or …you will get many articles on the subject.

Falwell himself was insistent that nuclear war with Russia was God’s plan for armageddon but when the USSR fell, he had to look elsewhere.
