Sitting here watching the ā€˜newsā€™ this morning it occurs to me how the MEDIA is making the ā€˜Veepstakesā€™ a measure of strength or lack thereof of Biden. They are INSISTING DAMMIT that he is ā€˜ditheringā€™ when in reality he is making his choice. As long as itā€™s done by the convention, itā€™s all good. There are times I get so tired of reporters and/or corporations ā€˜makingā€™ the news. OK rant overā€¦

Personally, Iā€™m glad Biden is getting under their skin. These bozos need to fill a 24 hr news cycle and theyā€™re chaffing at the bit to snicker, snark and libel at the veep candidate. Let the vultures wait.

Wondering what people here think. Should Biden select a candidate who will expand his base or should he pick someone whose ideological profile is close to his own?

In the past, candidates expanded their base by picking someone who was geographically different: in 1960 JFK picked Johnson, Lincoln picked Johnson.

FDR had to pick Nance to win the nomination in 1932, and Truman to shore up conservatives in 1944.

On the other hand, in 1980 Reagan picked George Bush Sr. who was from the old guard branch of the GOP - thus giving those Republicans a reason to show up and vote on election day.

Did Hillary fail to expand her base enough to win? What would expanding her base look like? Maybe selecting Elizabeth Warren from the progressive wing? Bernie Sanders? Keep in mind the VP is a nothing burger - a minister without portfolio. In most cases, its only use is to expand the base come election time.

Is shunning the progressive wing worth losing the election?

Was it worth it in 2016?

Would Hillary have won in 2016 if she had made Bernie her VP? (i.e. would she pick up the 100,000 votes she needed to win in the rust belt or would Bernie on her ticket have damaged her?)

Anyway - if Biden were to attempt to expand his base, what would be the best way to do that? Ideologically or geographically? Go after rust belt votes or sunbelt votes? and if so who is the best pick.

Just asking, though I am from the progressive/populist wing I will be voting Dem no matter who is on the ticket. So my vote is secure. I want to understand how people think about this issue.

Read that Whitmer and Harris are on the speaking schedule but not Rice. That could be a bit of misdirection, or a signal that itā€™s Rice, or maybe someone less expected.

Personally, Harris is my #1, and regarding Rice, I have a little hestiance about someone with no experience running for office. But I trust Joe.

Hope Biden makes the announcement during Trumpā€™s presser to troll him and the media.

Betting markets are going back and forth between Harris and Rice. If it is truly down to those 2 candidates, then Harris would be the better fit for VP just in terms of relevant experience. Weā€™ll see what Joe does.

Some of my friends on the right think thereā€™s something odd or mysterious about him waiting this long to announce. Then I remind them that ā€œObama announced Biden on 8/23/08. McCain announced Palin on 8/29/08. Romney announced Ryan on 8/11/12. George H.W. Bush announced Dan Quayle on 8/16/88.ā€

Harris has the most positives, least negatives.

She is his ultimate balance.

Age/gender/Race/geographyā€¦ oldschool/newer schoolā€¦

She flirted with Medicare for all, allows a nod the the left w/o going to far. Which balances Joeā€™s slower approach.

And then the other side is there is the obvious bond Harris had w/ Beau.

The unsaid but felt nod to the Obama years will be palpable.

Only reason not to choose her is if there is some weird personality conflict. Even then the pairing is so perfect that it is the best case for a landslide victory.

Harris pulls NC over the line more clearly than any other. Not to mention the Senate races in the south that could be helped by a strong black woman on the ticket with unquestionable experience to assume the presidency should she be called upon early.

Also agree w/ @khyber900

With you until the Bolded part.

We know Joe has a streak like John McCain in the way that he would overvalue a political surprise or something like that. Itā€™s an old school politician thing.

Joe wonā€™t pick a Palin (heā€™s not against the ropes the way McCain was, so would be less hail mary)

Butā€¦

I am comforted by Harrisā€™ quiet confidence and the stream of leaked stories about considering anyone basically but Harris.

Maybe team joe is trying to make a surprise out of things somewhatā€¦(or at least a relief)

Soā€¦ if Harrisā€¦ as I think it will be.

I think that we donā€™t get the pick unti at least Thursday.

First thing many will do is Google Kamala Harris upon her being picked.

I think the Biden camp would want to let the Googles clear a few days given the following.

This will make for both some funny RW confusion and some much less funny RW memesā€¦

Yes! I can hear the Sunday talk shows already second-guessing whoever Biden picks. BTW, after Trump picked Pence they did not second guess him on it. Watch and see what happens Sunday.

The case for Warren seems stronger than ever, especially after the revelation that Rice is up to her neck in fossil-fuel investments. You canā€™t have evil people in the White House, not if youā€™re a Democrat. That said, the Rice candidacy has made Harris seem better by comparison.

Itā€™s not an either/or proposition.

Whichever woman he chooses will be the right choice.

Iā€™ll be happy with whomever he picks but, I have no doubt that the Dems and Media will rip into each other, Biden and the VP if THEIR candidate isnā€™t picked.

A CBS reporter had Obama speaking Thursday before CNN and NYT had him at Wednesday. It would be easy to swap his Wed place to Harris, it makes sense for Obama to introduce Biden. Maybe Hillary introduces the VP as another crack in the glass ceiling.

I think they wait until after that Warren CA fundraiser tonight to announce, try to grab as much money from her supporters as they can before folks process their disappointment.

At this point they are just trolling us so I hope it is over soon.
