Former Vice President Joe Biden declared on Tuesday that Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump if he continues to stonewall attempts to investigate his alleged wrongdoing, including his call to the Ukrainian president.
Hmm, I kinda sorta worry about this being perceived as a Biden vs. Trump episode. It should be more about the People vs. Trump, if you want to get everyone on board.
A segment of the Very Online community may see impeachment as a great thing. Polling is pretty clear that the majority of the American people see it as a last resort (something like 10% of all Americans disapprove of Trump overall but have never supported impeachment). I think this statement was written narrowly and intelligently.
And daring Donald Trump to shoot himself in the foot is never a bad idea.
Nixon was reelected with 49 states, and 19 or so months later he resigned. Things turn around very quickly, and I daresay we the people are so exhausted by trumPP because he’s inescapable on media that we may be ready to say goodnight and goodbye.
Also, 40 House members lost their seats in the midterm elections and something like 350 Dems flipped R seats in the year or so before that. We and particularly women are paying attention. Woke is the term, am I right or am I right?
This is a good point about Nixon winning 49 states and driven from office anyway. Neither Nixon or Trump are liked personally, and that matters when serious issues are in play. And Trump only won the Electoral College, and just a minority and not a plurality of the popular vote, and likely to lose his re-election bid anyway.
So it doesn’t seem that impeachment (and likely acquittal in the Senate, if they even take it up), would hurt the Ds very much with the public as long as they have good cause. And I’m going to counter the buzz that the Ds should focus solely on Trump’s Ukraine bad acts. His brazenness and immediate attempts to cover it up support the accusations about Russian interference and obstruction of justice. And the public sitting as a jury are convinced by patterns.
Lastly, Trump’s Ukraine defense of wanting to fight ‘corruption’ leaves him open to additional charges of his own corruption, including Emoluments Clause violations and his full-out attempts to keep his financial affairs hidden. No need to avoid reminding the public of just what a scumbag Trump is.
“If the President does not comply with such a request of the Congress, if he continues to obstruct Congress and flaunt the law, Donald Trump will leave congress, in my view no choice, but to initiate impeachment,” Biden said. “That would be a tragedy, but a tragedy of his own making.”
JOE BIDEN: They are. This could come up very quickly. They have a responsibility to move if, in fact, they are unable to get the data, that’s totally within their power. To be able to subpoena before the Congress to make a judgment.
If they stonewall that, then the only other Constitutional avenue for them is impeachment.
This is the problem with Biden: he thinks an impeachment inquiry is all that is needed to clear this up. He has no clue at this point that this whole story is being turned against him. By the time he does figure it out (if he ever does) it will be too late. This is why he’s such a terrible presidential candidate. He has very little self awareness and his political reflexes are incredibly slow. It’s like the swift boat ad against Kerry. It was a stupid stunt that only worked because Kerry reacted so slowly to it.
Biden should have gotten ahead of the accusations against his son and exposed them for the bullshit they really are point by point. Calling it “criminal” behavior only works for those who actually know what happened, and that’s far too few of us. The rest never know who to believe and team Trump already got the jump on the narrative.
Trump committed perhaps one of the worst crimes he’s committed during his presidency (which is saying a lot) and Biden is looking worse as a result. That shows just how clueless Biden is and how catastrophic he’d be as a presidential candidate.
But at the same time, remember that Nixon’s opposition in 1972 was George McGovern, who was famously a dove in the face of the Vietnam war, and had the scandal of Tom Eagleton who had the temerity to admit to depression and hospitalization for said depression - that was enough to disqualify him back in the day.
Nixon had a lot of things going in his favor, but the McGovern presidential campaign had a whole lot of issues, leading to that 49 state win.
So much fun watching everyone who wants Biden out of the race tie themselves in knots trying to come up with why him saying this is bad. Kudos for entertaining me…now, would you care to return to the rational world of reality and give credit where it’s due?
It’s the same thing people are doing with Pelosi. They think they’re so smart that they can fabricate an argument that turns even demonstrably good things into bad things in order to serve their ultimate goal of destroying that person.
