Biden Campaign Denies Former VP Seeks Only One Term If Elected POTUS | Talking Points Memo

On Wednesday, Joe Biden’s presidential campaign pushed back against Politico’s report that Biden only wants to serve one term in office if elected in 2020.

I think this is the dumbest thing, just the dumbest. Biden is 77 years old. He clearly is not the sharpest tool in the box at this point. His pitch is “we gotta beat Trump, gotta right the ship” with a little change thrown in.

If he would just admit that he does not crave the job, did not run in 2016, only doing so out of duty, would only serve one term, and wants to elevate the future generate of leaders, he would remove some of the angst against his candidacy.

yeh, I know the “lame duck” argument, but his entire argument to vote for him is “I can win this” not “I will do x, y, z big plans”, so his focus ought to be on winning.

And who started this rumor, exactly?

It was in the hill. They will print anything. Could-a-bin Trump or any one of Biden’s primary opponents. Could been someone at the Hill going for click-bate.

This said, this is NOT a point to equivocate over, so rumor and then denial is not a good look for Biden.

I don’t think I could handle hearing “malarkey” every day for eight years nor would I like to be addressed as one of the “folks” he’d be representing. P.S. It’s no secret BHO wasn’t crazy about him in 2008, no one will speak of it now, (according to current Atlantic reporting Biden originally came into the Obama fold as a matter of transactional politics, picked to balance the 2008 ticket and BHO had Deval Patrick on his mind) but we’ll definitely get “a noun, a verb and barackobama” for the duration.

Do we really want to elect a lame duck?

Amy Klobuchar looks better all the time.

I have never liked Biden, I blamed him back in 1991 for Clarence Thomas. Biden refused to allow Anita Hill to call a bunch of witnesses to back up her testimony. Hill had 6 witnesses in DC, ready to go. Biden said he wanted to avoid a circus.

The ugly reality though is that Biden polls much better in swing states. Even with his name being dragged in the dirt recently (which he has not handled very well IMHO) they guy just does better than the other three. E.g. CNN just polled Texas, Biden trails Trump by 1% (48% Trump, 47% Biden) while Warren/Sanders/Buttigieg all trail Trump by 7%.

I think a candidate with a more moderate profile (Klobacher is the only one left) who is not a 37 yo mayor of small town who just happens to be gay, would do better than Biden in the end, but she has not broken out yet.

That said, my CA vote is going to whomever I think is most electable at the time I cast it.

I’m perfectly good with Biden serving for 4 years and then handing off to a younger candidate. That’s why his choice of VP is so critical. That person (Buttigieg? Klobuchar?) should be the odd-on favorite for the 2024 nomination. I think Biden owes us a few “leaks” as to who that will be.

There will be a lot to clean up after Trump’s mess, at least 4 years’ worth. As long as Biden does better in head-to-head match-up polls against Trump than the other candidates (as he continues to do), and he has to ability to appoint good people to serve and advise him, Biden is the guy to do the cleanup.

Marc Thiessen has an editorial in WaPo today where he compares Biden to Mitt Romney in 2012. It is maybe the only column that Thiessen has ever written that I agree with pretty much completely.

No… but 2nd term, after Obama ran out of Fucks to give he was less careful and a bit bolder.

A one termer who starts with few electoral fucks to give may kinda be right after trump.

Too bad I don’t think Biden is that guy.

He didn’t deny it. His campaign deputy campaign manager (sort of) denied it. Biden is “not thinking about this”. Well, that is probably true. He has more important things to think about right now.

I wrote a response to that article. Anything that Thiessen says comes straight from the Republican play book, and serves Trump’s purpose. If Thiessen says it, the opposite is true.

Exactly… I have not heard any compelling reason to hire Biden. Instead I have heard more reason not to do so, age being only one.

Question: Why is it that Americans seem to have problems elevating younger politicians into the elite ranks. Just yesterday I read where Finland has selected their 3rd women as PM and the youngest ever at age 34. The 4 leading parties in the country are all led by women, 3 of them under 35.

What’d’ya wanna bet it was some meme on social media that went viral? Some wishful thinking by some to continue to discredit the guy.

Welcome to the brave new world.

Word on the street is that Trump is gonna dump Pence and run Nikki Haley for veep for just this very theory.

Honestly, I think the primary reason is there’s no one young that has any kind of gravitas or experience to bring to the table. Schiff will be ready in a few years. But really who else? Even the younger candidates we have running don’t know enough to come in out of the rain.

And we will never get a woman in charge as long as the misogynists in the GOP and the media continue unabated with the nonsense that a woman isn’t strong enough to run. That argument went out with Golda Meir, but continues to this day.

Lame duck out of the chute. What could possibly go wrong.

Think politics is bad now? Think the campaign season already starts too early? This move would put everything on steroids.

His entire presidency would be one huge campaign ad for the DNC and any and all would-be 2024 contenders will create a circular firing squad thereby complicating every decision. The whole thing will be a hot mess.

The Trump circus has been bad enough do we really want another 4 years of circus?

Hell, I don’t think I’ve ever agreed with him much past the first couple of words, so I’ll have to check it out.

Well the fact that constitutionally enshrined age discrimination means none of those women would even be eligible to run for president might be part of it.

I found this interesting:

In the latest WHDH 7 News/Emerson College Iowa Poll, former Vice President Joe Biden has maintained his support and lead in the Iowa Caucus with 23% of the vote. Senator Bernie Sanders is the runner up with 22%, followed by Pete Buttigieg with 18% of the vote. Senator Elizabeth Warren has lost ground, receiving 12% support. Amy Klobuchar has seen her popularity grow with 10%, followed by Cory Booker with 4%, and Tom Steyer with 3%. Michael Bloomberg, Tulsi Gabbard, and Andrew Yang received 2% each. The rest of the field had no support. (December 7-10, MM, Democratic Caucus, n=325,
+/-5.4%)

Klobuchar has risen to 10% in Iowa.
Then again, it’s Iowa. According to Iowa, Michele Bachmann was going to be the candidate to beat, not Romney.
Hope Klobuchar starts to rise nationally also.
