President Joe Biden put out a blistering statement criticizing Georgia’s new overhaul of its election rules, accusing Republican state lawmakers of rushing “through an un-American law to deny people the right to vote.”
This is what’s known as the “bully pulpit” and it’s honestly a good thing that the previous resident didn’t understand how to use it. And an excellent thing that President Biden very much does.
This is excellent messaging…people who aren’t plugged into politics or history understand what Jim Crow means, so calling what’s happening now worse than that is going to engage them. Simple messaging is always best. And, this also basically calls Republicans cowards for trying to change the rules of elections so they win no matter what, instead of playing by the rules that allow every American the freedom to vote.
It’s very effective, I bet polling shows that people get behind the concepts of racism blocking Americans from voting, and this is going to get widespread support. Republicans standing against Americans voting, blocking “those people” from freely voting, those just aren’t things that should be happening, and it looks like Democrats have decided this is the critical issue for them and the nation now that COVID and the recovery act have been dealt with (for the moment). We’re going to start seeing a lot more movement now I think…Republicans pushed through an awful bill in GA that shows what they are doing, and juxtaposed against Republicans in Congress lying about what’s happening in the states is only going to make them look that much worse.
Stand back, things are going to get really serious now, Biden wouldn’t have come out like this unless he thought this was something Americans could get behind and that he could do something about it.
I am pleased that Biden is standing loud & strong on HR 1…he knows it’s a bill worth abolishing the filibuster. There is plenty of history demonstrating how the filibuster was invoked primarily against Civil Rights & that was Jim Crow 1.
This is a winning message in court of public opinion. GOP will not relent & will continue to be on wrong side of history.
Calling it out and tying it to Jim Crow is a smart move (and it’s true). It helps demonstrate the counter narrative to CJ Roberts’ “post-racial” nonsense and people have internalized that Jim Crow was/is a bad thing so putting Republicans in the position of trying to defend “Jim Crow” is bad for them.
In Georgia that’s especially true since there is no argument to be made for protecting against voter fraud. Kemp and the election officials all said that the 2020 election was absolutely fair and honest.
The Georgia Guardians Of Plutocrats have to pass these draconian laws lest they never get elected to anything ever again. “People really don’t like us,” they noted.
I’ve criticized Biden in the past for letting his mouth get ahead of his brain sometimes, but he’s right on the money this time. No fucks left to give on this particular subject, no “comity” with Republicans. There will be massive pearl-clutching on Fox tonight. Lindsey will need an extra dose of smelling salts to recover.
“Jim Crow” is a shorthand that is well known…not to everyone obviously, but it’s also such a simple moniker that it’s easy to ask/search for what it means. And, a quick Google search makes it clear exactly what it means. For Black Americans, they know, even if they didn’t live it, and they surely don’t want to go back to it again. I think enough understand it, even if they don’t get the details…and making the explicit connection gets to the racism, and that’s the key point of what has been happening with voting rights.
Republicans are also now being identified with white supremacists, so calling this Jim Crow just tightens that connection…and they do it themselves by lying about the laws and attacking BLM. It’s making the entire Republican party even more awful in people’s eyes…they really are going to destroy themselves by hanging onto white supremacists as a voting block.
