The Ukrainian prosecutor at the heart of President Donald Trump’s baseless Joe Biden conspiracy theory was seen as corrupt by Trump’s own Republican colleagues.
Trump will be very upset that these Republicans sent this letter before he even became the Republican nominee for president in 2016, just to mess with his strategy for reelection in 2020.
Where is the loyalty, I ask ya.
ETA: Oh, here’s the loyalty - and the hypocrisy …
From Vox:
“Rather, it’s the Republicans who have changed their tune. Portman is backing President Donald Trump’s assertion that he didn’t withhold military aid for Ukraine in order to extract Kyiv’s help to investigate the Bidens. And Johnson signed a September 2019 letter asking Attorney General Bill Barr to look into possible Biden-Ukraine corruption.”
There’s likely more of this kind of stuff in the record, the western world in general was pushing to remove the prosecutor because of his corruption. It won’t matter for the Trump supporters, they will refuse to believe no matter what, but the more independents see this stuff the more then will realize the Biden connection is nonsense, an attempt to cover for Trump’s bad behavior, and the more they will turn against Trump.
More to the point, as Michelle Goldberg suggested in the Times yesterday, Biden and the other European officials (not to mention the Repub Senators) were not calling for the ouster of the prosecutor because he was too aggressively pursuing Biden Jr, but because he wasn’t aggressive enough. The rap on the prosecutor was that he wasn’t pursuing corruption, which is 180 degrees opposite of Trump’s outrageous assertion.
In the once upon a time fairy tale world where up was up and shit flowed thru pipes to the treatment plant we would’ve expected this bunch to call it a day, force King Turd to resign and get back to bickering about guns & socialists. That they’re still claiming that his and their own urine running down their faces is a light rain is starting to surprise even me.
But did they really sign the letter? If you look at the letter very very very closely, you can see that the signatures for the GOP are not only forged, but that the same person forged all three signatures with the same pen – and that pen is probably at the bottom of an ocean.
Sens. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Rob Portman (R-OH) and former Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL), along with five of their Democratic colleagues, sent a letter to then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in February 2016 pressing him to make “urgent reforms” to the prosecutor general’s office.
