I saw an opinion piece today stating that this is Biden’s chance to show the public what a cantankerous, racist tRump is. By this point I kinda’ believe the public knows that and 50% are appalled, 42% love it and 8% have the brains of a fruit fly.
If he does cancel, it’s the clearest sign yet that the GOP and Trump campaign have already conceded the election and have turned their attention to rigging the selection of the reps to the Electoral College and stacking the Supreme Court to back them up.
I wasn’t a believer until recently, but I am certain that Trump will declare the election illegitimate if it goes against him and use partisan state legislatures to get himself reappointed, crying about election fraud and unfair treatment every flippin’ step of the way. If the GOP decides to go along with him it will literally be the end of democracy in America.
We’ll only know if we have smell-o-vision.
This is the “what’s gonna happen” narrative we are stuck with for the next six days.
And I am hoping that a good part of what Joe Biden will say will be directed to the American people…in as much a space he can muster, given the insane beast with whom he will be forced to share a Debate stage
Oh no! Eustace is finally losing it - it’s “person, WOMAN, man, camera, TV”!
Frankly, it is deeply unfair to debate a prolific pathological liar. You have to take up too much time debunking all the lies and it swamps your own message, unless your message is that your opponent is a fucking liar who cannot be believed.
The “moderators” need to “moderate” the damn lies and call them out when they occur.
He stopped trying to win the election a long time ago. He’s trying to win the post-election.
We all know trump will go off topic and bring up Johnson’s weak attempt to smear Hunter and Joe Biden. I hope his debate team prepares him well.
And I hope Biden’s response to trump includes mentioning that seeking foreign help in the election (seeking dirt on Biden and his family) is what got trump impeached in the first place - and that Ron Johnson just continued what trump started…
I am pretty skeptical of that strategy, which is being floated all over Twitter today.
It sets up a lot of crazy scenarios, where many of the battleground states (WI, MI, PA) all have Democratic governors, and none have super majorities in the legislature.
There is also a pretty big ripple effect for all downballot races too. How does the state declare that there is fraud, but only on the Presidential race, for example, since all the races are on the same ballot? That means they will be declaring a whole of of republican seats invalid, too.
And I am not even mentioning the explosion that will happen with voters over such maneuvers. Every republican going along with this is instantly dead meat. I just don’t see that many willing to sacrifice their careers for Trump.
Speed of light
Fine, Joe can ask Trump why 200,000 dead is inconsequential. And why do Republicans want to kill grandma? Or where are the tax returns? Or is he really that afraid of a little rain? And so on.
Yea, and I really hope this whole thing wakes Dems up to this fact and that they need to bring in NEW voters to just overwhelm these assholes because they ain’t winning them over.
I just spent some time in rural ‘Trump country’ where there not only are Trump signs freaking everywhere, but many where the ones of him drawn all buff standing on tanks and shit. Even though I’m a city kid, I redneck up pretty well and just by sitting places and listening to the locals, yea they LOVE Trump for the cantankerous racism and fuck you liberals and city dwellers. These people are a long lost cause (can debate why all day) they’re not voting for ‘no damn democrat’ and their love of Trump has nothing to do with policies and governance, and everything to do with identity politics, fear and hate.
good, I hope the SC will take note, because it’s looking like their votes are the only ones that are going to count
That’s all we assumed Clinton had to do as well, and, well, here we are. This is all for the media. Trump’s base doesn’t give a shit about his debate performance, and, frankly, the more unhinged and incoherent he is, the more they love it because its the whole process of democratic politics that they hate. Trump mocks and undermines democratic norms and sells himself as an authoritarian alternative who “gets things done.” That’s all that matters to them. There are really no “undecided” voters to persuade this year. That leaves the beltway media, who need something to write about for the next couple of weeks, so that’s why we get this idiodic spectacle in which Joe Biden comes out and talks like someone running for president who has ideas and policies and Trump comes out and just flings poo at the camera. And we all have to pretend this is normal.
Really? Looking at all those throwing themselves on grenades for their devoted leader.
You can’t effectively factcheck Trump in a debate because he doesn’t care that he’s lying. His whole schtick is “I don’t give a shit and you can’t make me.” I think Wallace will press him, though, and he may really get rattled, which is what can actually hurt him by making him look weak and indecisive. Unfortunately, I’m also betting that Wallace will try to “be fair” by needling Biden about some made-up horseshit about his son and Burisma or something.
Biden ought to say:
Hey Dotard (capital D for respect), whatcha gonna do if “reelected” when our former allies support sanctions against the United States for all of the bullshit you have flung? Because you know, our friends have only stuck by us this long waiting for us to realize what a joke we have become once you showed up, now that you have promised to stick around another 8, 12, 16 years, they won’t have to wait any longer and will move on from the no longer productive relationship.
State legislatures are a different beast the the House and Senate.
And, its not just worrying about having to face voters who the are disenfranchising. They would quite literally be declaring their own election invalid as well. And, if theoratically they could stick to that point, that means incurring the expense of ANOTHER series of statewide elections immediately…at a time that most states are facing massive budget shortfalls due to COVID.
So, its not just “well, voters will forget in two years”…it means immediately going back to those same voters and asking for their vote.
And just to be clear, the entire premise here is very, very unlikely to stand up in any court. That premise is, because its taking longer to count ballots, the election is a fraud. To make that claim, they have to bring strong evidence of actual fraud…and just because the state is counting ballots slower than you want, isn’t strong evidence. And they have to do that in multiple states.
Its a scare tactic aimed at getting “Eeoroye” Democrats to give up. Don’t be one.
This will confirm all your fears. My only hope is that they are too stupid and incompetent to pull it off.
I hope you are right.
