BIden Against Defunding Police | Talking Points Memo

Truth. Police end up having to do social work where they aren’t really qualified or have time for.

Totally support Uncle Joe on this. From a personal perspective - I’m a homo, convert to liberal Judaism. And say what you will, while there are a lot of nice straight people out there, there are many who want us dead. And, that’s not hyperbole.

As for the Jewish thing - I do not present physically as Shmuel Mandelbaum. And because of this, I have on more than one occasion been in situations where non-jews presumed that there were no Jews around, and conversations went in very uncomfortable directions. I have had to causally mention … “oh, that’s interesting, at my synagogue we …”

So no, I want law enforcement around.

I also want us to be able to police the police with much greater force, be able to overhaul the hiring and training process, include REAL psychological screening, and allow the power to remove from duty with a civilian-led board.

I also strongly advocate for run-on sentences.

Yes - US policing needs to become much more like the ideal of the British police, with neighborhood police from the neighborhood, focused on keeping the peace and investigating crime, rather than fundraising via enforcement, or waging wars on crime, or responding to mental health crises with deadly force.

UK police in reality have many issues, and yet still manage to kill far fewer people (per unit of population) than US (such a low bar!). A big part has to be military-style strict gun control, since lack of gun control justifies arming police with the same weapons.

you should be working at the DNC – being able to formulate this kind of “reaction” talking point is a great gift!

Defunding, abolishing, restructuring, all of these are decisions for individual municipalities.

I do not think the problem is Socialists,

This is a genuine grassroots movement, and no single person is in charge of messaging. For all the sincerity of the crowds, they aren’t nearly as capable of making good messaging decisions as the networks of marketers and propagandists paid by Murdoch/Koch/Mercer/Herring/Heritage/Fox/OANN. They’ve got money, we have people. They would have tossed the slogan “defunding the police” after the first focus group. We, not so quickly.

Oversight and the ability to fire bad apples. And, screw their unions if they are keeping bad actors employed-we hear that all the time with teachers, right?

“Biden Calls for Systematic Reform of American Policing” doesn’t have the same ring, does it?

Republicans are already trying to redefine the protests as Democrats and blacks being pro-crime and anti-police.

It’s no accident that Russian bots are among those pushing ‘defund’ - we need to make certain we tell people that we want reform - and that it’s Mitch “let them go bankrupt” McConnell that wants to force communities Into slashing spending on first responders.

“There are many police departments across the country who are seeking to realize these kinds of changes, but haven’t had the resources to,” Bates said in the statement.

Well, if they spent less on military hardware and vehicles, they’d have the resources. Let’s go there.

Biden campaign director of rapid response Andrew Bates told TPM in a statement that the former VP’s position against defunding the police is a stance that his criminal justice proposal “made clear months ago.”

Asked for a response, the director of rapid response for Chiselin’ Trump’s campaign said, “zzz zzz.”

Not entirely. The Federal government is complicit in handing off surplus military hardware to even small town PD’s. Every small town in America does not need bombproof Humvees and armored trucks with a weapon turret on top. That’s what should be “defunded” and buried in the town dump.

Except for a few SWAT units on call, police need to get back to looking like police when they interface with the public. Even in “active shooter” situations, there’s no need for multiple armored vehicles. It’s military cosplay for a lot of these small town and smaller city PD’s.

Of course not. Biden needs votes. Just as, Frey, Mayor of Minneapolis is not supporting defunding. Despite Minneapolis City Council voting for it.

Elected Politicians should have no role in this. Only civilians Should have power to hold police accountable & control police budget.

Good for Biden. It’s a nutty idea.

The military transfer program provides those things free-of-charge to police departments.

So it’s actually a money-saver for them, as they can use that instead of having to purchase other toys on the market.
