Biden Admin Official Points To Hurricane Ida’s Damage In Pitch For Reconciliation Package | Talking Points Memo

Biden administration officials are calling for action after Hurricane Ida left a trail of eye-popping decimation across multiple states in its wake.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1386845

Hurricane Ida, western wildfires, climate change and Covid all represent human suffering and economic impact.

Phenomena not discernible to, or of interest to, Republicans.

The magic of social division is that the GOP can exacerbate it and thus draw attention away from life

Life like killer climate-change-fueled events.

If common people (the category that I am in) were to all think of themselves as American citizens first, we would be a whole lot better off.

And notice that Biden has gone out of his way to constantly emphasize “The United States of America”.

We cannot continue down this path of division.

Thank you, TPM, for not posting Manchin’s photo along with this article because then, as stated in my news-gathering policy, I wouldn’t have read it.

Manchin and the Republicans insist on ‘dropping the cost’ of the Infrastructure Bill but then whine and snivel about THEIR states needing money for climate damage. I just saw a NJ mayor on complaining about a bill that has been in the works for over 10 years to mitigate these problems. The money all comes from the same source. The TAXPAYERS. Maybe we should suck it up, pay for the infrastructure and down the road we won’t be constantly shelling out for ‘patches’…

Let me remind all that, when given the chance after Hurricane Sandy, many GQP’ers voted against any monies for recovery in the Northeast.

They aren’t going to care any more now than they did then.

Sooo I guess it hit home that there were more deaths in the NE than where the hurricane came ashore in the South.
So will TX, LA, MS, AL, GA, FL, and both Carolinas give a shit about the deaths in the NE? Again I wish someone would consult the archives and total up the cost of repair and rebuilding in those states vs the hurricane and super storms farther up the east coast.

Juxtapose (1) the theme of this story and comment thread and (2) a Trump rally.

When that is simply juxtaposed, one can see how we wasted the six years since he came down that fucking escalator.

Careful, citizen. One might think you’re saying the government is here to help. We wouldn’t want any . . . unfortunate misunderstandings. Would we?

(Edited to add missing “want.”)

Logical thinking generally doesn’t fare well. I’m constantly amazed (amused?) when the people who incessantly complain about taxes are the same people who incessantly complain about potholes, snow removal, . . . Apparently “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch” is too complex for them to understand.

TPM is laboring on Labor Day. That’s great but “eye-popping decimation”?

Decimate: to reduce by 10%

Decimate is a good word that is routinely misused. (And my pet peav).

Radical climate change solution: build a city in the desert!

I think of myself as a World Citizen first and foremost.
All of our major issues are global and require global solutions.
“America first” is nimbyism and worthless.

When a significant portion of the population is innumerate there is no difference between reducing something by 10% and reducing something to 10% of its initial amount. In practice, decimating the GOP would achieve the same result either way so I’m good with it.

Better solution: Move to Doha or Baku. At least there’s beaches nearby. Don’t want a beach? Tehran is lovely this time of year.

Wasted? If only! We lost so much ground, across the board, during those four years of ghastly historical mistake.

  1. Someone should ask Senator Cassidy if this is another one of those “distractions” from important stuff, like Benghazi, I mean Afghanistan.

  2. In other news – I guess it’s news, since it appeared on the TPM front page just below this article – we have this:

  1. Brian512 has no interest in clicking on that one.

That is all. Happy Labor Day, my fellow peasants.

OT.

Libs worry too much about messaging because they notice it works for the cons with the cons.
