The jury has reached a verdict for Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis Police Department officer on trial for murder charges over the killing George Floyd in May 2020.
Ten hours is maybe a good sign? Either a juror has been stuck in a bad place throughout, so no use for further deliberations or Chauvin is, I hope, toast.
Exactly. It’s way past time for a guilty verdict and some accountability in cases like this. It can not, MUST not, continue to be the case that the police get away with murder.
My heart is with my Minneapolis family and friends. I was in MN when George Floyd was killed. I remember the anguish and grief. I hope the city isn’t thrown into a paroxysm of violence again.
The group is more racially diverse than Hennepin County, Minn., as a whole: Six are white, four are Black, and two identify as multiracial. Five are men and seven are women.
Reaching a verdict this quickly with a group this diverse reinforces your assertion.
Chauvin’s best case outcome, speaking realistically, was a hung jury. This jury is not hung. They might not be convicting on all three charges, but I can’t imagine he’s walking away.
