BERLIN (AP) — Austria and the Czech Republic said Monday they plan to relax some restrictions imposed because of the coronavirus starting after Easter, getting ahead of their European counterparts as they announced proposals that would begin a slow return to normal life.
Tom Britton, a maths professor at Stockholm University who has been modelling the spread of the virus, predicts 10 per cent of the population is already infected. “If I guess correctly about half the population could be infected by the end of April,” he told The Times.
Although Mr Tegnell has avoided describing his strategy as ‘herd immunity’, he has spoken of the inevitability of the disease passing through a large proportion of the population.
He has said his goal is to slow the spread of infection to a manageable pace which would avoid straining the country’s healthcare system, and believes a strict lockdown is not necessary to achieve that.
“We put in a lot of effort trying to stop the disease from entering Sweden,” said Dr Tegnell. “We also did a lot of testing and contact tracing. This bought us time for the health service to prepare.”
"For most people, the virus causes mild to moderate symptoms such as fever and cough. But for some, especially older adults and those with existing health problems, it can cause pneumonia and lead to death." This statement reinforces what is proving less and less to be the case: across all populations, a sizable number of young, healthy adults (20 to 45 years old) are also succumbing to the fatality of this disease.
It’s the AP boilerplate that ends up in every article.
I wonder whether start-stop will turn out to be even worse economically than longterm shutdown. You reopen, bring your workers back, restock all your perishables, advertise to get your customers coming back in, and then 2-3 week later the infection rate starts rocketing and you have to shut it all down again.
just start opening back up in mid-april. the curve will decline and testing will be available particularly for people who have had it and are cleared. keep the old and vulnerable locked up and given vaccines as soon as available. MOVE ON.
I suspect they’re referring to damage to lungs that will last a long time.
That’s been pretty widely reported.
Would it kill you to take a less belligerent attitude towards people with different views, and not attribute to them things they didn’t say? (yskov said nothing about psychological trauma, though that too is a real thing.)
If Sweden wants to be the control in our pandemic experiment, then we can’t stop them. At the very least, we will know who underreacted, overreacted and got it right afterwards.
although aparently the new generation of vents (including some of the improvised models) are believed to cause a lot less damage by not allowing full contraction…
