Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on Sunday morning compared President Trump’s tweets reacting to protests across the country in the wake of George Floyd’s death to his response during the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville.
If this nation had a leader, that person would be out in front, visible to our citizens, speaking plainly and empatheticly in order to soothe, to calm, to reassure, to at least try to de-escalate tensions.
Instead, we get Bull Conner-esque threats of violence from an invisible Provoker-In-Chief, issued from behind the cowardly shield of a Twitter account.
“Or, if he can’t be silent, if there’s somebody of good sense and good conscience in the White House, put him in front of a teleprompter and pray that he reads it, and at least says the right things, because he is making it worse,” Bottoms said.
Guess that takes Atlanta out of the running to host the republican national convention.
Even go back further before Charlottesville when the Trump supporter in Boston beat up a homeless man. Trump dismissed it and said that his supporter was being passionate. And of course the threats to others and the media like Katie Tur who had to be led out of a rally and have Secret service protection.
“Or, if he can’t be silent, if there’s somebody of good sense and good conscience in the White House, put him in front of a teleprompter and pray that he reads it, and at least says the right things, because he is making it worse,” Bottoms said.
Umm, no such luck. Anyone with any integrity, credibility or propriety simply does not work for this White House. Stephen Miller writes his speeches, Bill Bar finds new ways to step on civil rights since he took over and blames the lefties and the military has been co-opted…so no, ain’t gonna happen. But its a nice thought.
Time to go a-gardening for me. I can’t stand watching the hell-hole that has become America under this lawless and bigoted maladministration. Sadly, I can still see pictures of White Supremacists and little nazis in my State Capitol with assault weapons, intimidating elected officials and the general public as the police gently stood by, while these same goobers yelled and spit in their faces, while the police demonstrated such complete restraint at every turn. Something is wrong with this picture, in our America, and I haven’t a clue how to fix any of it today except to plant something that will bear fruit for tomorrow and to find some solace in sunshine, fresh air and some measure of solitude.
I don’t know if this is the best analogy, but to be a person of color in America is to be a perpetual guest in someone else’s home. This is a country where white people, regardless of how long they’ve been in America, feel as if they’re the host, and people of color -regardless of how long they’ve been here -are mere guests to be tolerated as long as they don’t get too “uppity”.
The power dynamics in a guest/host relationship are grossly skewed towards the host. Oh, he may be quite generous, magnanimous, and welcoming, but, at any time and for any reason, his acceptance of your presence can be revoked, something you well understand.
As a guest, you know you must always be on your very best behavior; you must learn and implicitly obey the rules of the home regardless of your personal opinions or beliefs. You must eagerly offer to help with the daily chores in the home, but never expect any aid in return. You may rest in this abode, but you must never relax. There is a sword dangling on a thread over your head at all times. Do you not understand the host has done you an immense favor by allowing you into his home and tolerating your presence? But once he’s tired of you, a simple tap on 3 buttons on his phone calls in the immense power of the State. And there, your fate awaits.
Of course, my definition of human being is not necessarily one the zoologists have — there has to be some essential “human” quality like empathy, fairness or compassion to qualify in my book.
So I’m with you that a stroke rendering the vile pustule spewing hatred and violence unable to speak does not fall under the category of harming a human being.
