Originally published at: At Manhattan DA’s Request, Judge Pauses Trump Hush Money Case - TPM – Talking Points Memo
In a sign of just how much Donald Trump’s election has overwhelmed his criminal cases, Manhattan prosecutors this weekend asked the judge in his hush money case to pause it while they assess the implications of Trump becoming president-elect. The Manhattan court in which Trump was found guilty in May released an email exchange on…
What The actual Fuck?
Merchan gave the fucker maximal deference – too much – due to the fact he was ex-President and then major-party candidate again. Having been convicted, it is only fair that he get the MAXIMUM sentence.
The fucker is not a king.
Honest to CHRIST. I never want to hear how the Cons are the ‘law and order’ party and how OUTRAGED these creeps are about ‘Defund the Police’. They have destroyed the courts and any semblance of ‘fair play’.
I think the sentence should proceed. Cost to grant trump defense must be paid by him. Also, being State charges, the moment is perfect for courtroom civil warfare. Of course Juge M will open fire on trump, that day next week. New York can handle this swindler and his massive crime. The States court can grind this until next congress elections and it shall……
Hmmm, sentence him and make him surrender to custody asap. Allow him an official US government phone only. And an US Government computer with zoom.
Agree to review requests for short releases, with ankle bracelet if no other way to perform duties. Otherwise he can conduct business from a jail cell, including taking oath of office. Inauguration ceremonies are just that—a ceremony. The only important point is oath of office and what better way to emphasize his defense of the Constitution than to be serving his time!
What a bunch of legal BS. If someone will be an adult in 90 days does the law wait 90 days to charge as an adult a crime committed as minor?
IANAL but this sounds like a change of jurisdiction, homicide committed in OH but he’s been elected in MI so now OH doesn’t have jurisdiction.
Nah, Marchan needs to sentence on present day facts. Should other situation arise subsequently then raise the issue then. By all means Marchan needs to proceed now based on facts now. Not what could be.
Yes, you got it, Why not?
I think the Supreme Court ruled against you on that issue. The Court named itself as the sole authority to determine what qualifies as an “official act” worthy of absolute immunity. The Court is about to have its own learning experience in FAFO in the new world order.
Cohen paid Daniels in October 2016, prior to Trump’s being elected president.
That could only be an official act if time ran backwards.
So if Cohen paid Stormy in Oct 2016, then Trump paid Cohen after the fact, as in Jan 2017? I’m I remembering this correctly?
Beloved Leader does not become the God Emperor once again until noon on 20 January. At the moment, he is not the president. Deal with him as one would any criminal who committed these crimes. Commit the crime, get the jury’s decision that you’re guilty, suffer the consequences. What’s so difficult with that? The whining of Dear Leader’s shysters to the contrary (paid for by the donations to the campaign, of course, otherwise they would be stiffed…).
I am 200% sure this kind of malarkey is not what the Founders had in mind. Convicted guilty is convicted guilty. Period.
Convicted criminal. Period.
Any deference to being elected President might be a matter to be considered during sentencing. Anything else strikes me as nullifying the Constitutional validity of the jury trial, at least in the context of this situation
Max sentence in this case is 4 years in prison. Trump will be lucky to get a stern “parental” lecture of "don’t do it again…k?
tip o’ the hat to @steviedee111 and fellow cynics who predicted “Trump walks on all of it”.
It figures.
I don’t think most people go to prison on something like this. They would probably ask him to pay up and put on probation or something. I doubt if jail was ever a real possibility. Even though he deserves it.
President or not. … why is trump beyond the law? It was that way years before now … before he got in politics even … what makes him so fucking special?
The activities in the hush money case had nothing to do with his role as president.
When you fight the law the law is supposed to win.
The SC thinks he is.
