“After much prayer, consultation, and thoughtful consideration…

I’d be curious to hear that prayer and some log of the duration of it.

Bonnen made a mistake getting caught on tape conspiring to stab a good number of his own caucus members in the back. That’s not a survivable offense.

And no, TX-House 25 is not even remotely a winnable district for any Democratic candidiate.

Hey!

It really is. And the GOP knows it, too. There’s already a schism forming (I think) between the burn-it-all-down crowd and those wanting to have a seat at the table.

For the governor, Texas has a history of electing brands more than policies - which is why it wasn’t crazy to run Wendy Davis in 2014 even though she was otherwise a weak candidate - but legislative races are a different story. Most non-local coverage is of the gubernatorial costume drama, but that’s a very narrow lens by which to view state politics.

It’s complicated. He’s been pretty hard right through most of his tenure in the House, and he had a reputation as a bully, but he surprised a lot of people in his one session as Speaker by not insisting on a lot of idiotic stuff like the the lite guv’s pet bathroom bill. So, somewhat moderate while acting as speaker, but still a rwnj behind the scenes.

The opposition to the bathroom bill was just being responsive to big business, which wanted no part of any possible/likely boycott on the state.

“After much prayer, consultation, and thoughtful consideration with my family, it is clear that I can no longer seek re-election as State Representative of District 25, and subsequently, as Speaker of the House,” Bonnen said.

It was either all that prayer, consideration, and other nonsense he mentioned, or it was the fact he got caught and now no repubes want to play with him in Texas. Turd. Good riddance.

Catamite is the original definition. Dashiel Hammett sneaked it by his editors because it has the word gun in it. Gunsel is Yiddish for gosling.

Ah! That makes sense - following the gander, as it were. “Catamite” I would guess is at least as old as “gunsel”. And I must have picked up “gunsel” from Hammett, and fell for the “gun” myself. “Catamite” I’ve known for decades. As a youngster I was a devoted reader of the “It pays to increase your word power” page in the Reader’s Digest. Nowadays I find the TPM crowd can be a fruitful source for new words and etymological arcana. Thanks!
