Since Trump, the base has been running this type of republican out of power. They want their peers, that is, authentic stupid to be in power. (See Trump,McCarthy etc)
Fortunately for DeSantis he has that dumb “Scott Walker dumbass” look about him and by saying dumb things with that dumb face he is believably stupid.
Seemingly he’s a lock for the Nod in 2024 when Trump backs out at the end.

No, we do need to fight for an amendment at least modifying the terms of lifetime appointments. I’d prefer to do away with them all together, for all appellate courts, in favor of 15 year or 13 year terms.(Actually, any value relatively prime to 4 years will work for me.) We can argue about whether they should be renewable or not. I say not, and I’d be willing to go to 19 year terms to get there.
Lifetime appointments take what ideally would be a process as apolitical as possible and turns it into the most divisive political process conceivable. We need to lower the stakes and be sure that they stay lowered.
Another way to work it would be to do the following:
- Appoint a Chief Justice for life.
- Appoint 0 Associate Justices. Finesse the current crop’s lifetime appointments by moving them to the Court of Appeals of their choice and leaving their salaries unchanged.
- Each District Court of Appeals appoints/elects/nominates one (1) judge to serve a five year term on the Supreme Court. The President confirms (or sends back) the nomination, forwarding it to the Senate.
- Supreme Court panels consist of 9 justices, the Chief and 8 “new” Associates. Cases are granted a hearing by at least six votes among the full panel of 13, removing the judge whose District Court was the source of the appeal. The Associate whose District Court was the source of the appeal may not sit on the panel when cases are granted certiorari.
There are undoubtedly other ways of doing it too, but we need to have the fight/discussion.
