As Congressional GOP Cheers Trump’s Rampage, The Courts Are The Last Hope To Stop Him

Hello. It’s the weekend. This is The Weekender :coffee: The country’s in a mighty precarious situation when the anti-Trump contingent is relying on John Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett to save democracy.  But with congressional Republicans cheering, or, at best, shrugging at Trump and Elon Musk’s rampage, the judiciary is the only institution with the…

So now we will see what is more important to these two… Saving Democracy, or screwing Democrats.

Suck up to fascists and Nazis, get squashed like tomato under D-9 Cat.

The Free Press, The Daily Caller, and Breitbart.

Golden Age. Trump. Gold. Sure that figures. But why does he really, personally, want to be chair of the Kennedy Center? Some weird DEI fetish? Bringing back the greatest hits of the 80’s? I’m baffled.

Trump changed his mind about allowing refugees into the our country, or rather…there is one group of refugees that he will welcome with open arms.

After years railing against immigrants coming to America, Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday to prioritize the U.S. resettlement of white South African “refugees” suffering from what he called “government-sponsored race-based discrimination.”

Afrikaners, architects of the historically brutal discriminatory system of apartheid in South Africa, would be resettled in America through the U.S. refugee program, which Trump had suspended by executive order on his first day in office, according to the president.

The Washington Post has reported that private land is confiscated only “rarely,” and is intended to address the disparities created by apartheid.

Afrikaners, who make up only 8 percent of the population, own three-fourths of the country’s farmland, while Blacks, who comprise 80 percent of the population, own just 4 percent of agricultural land, according to the country’s 2017 land audit, The Post noted.

The next time Senator Tillis says something about previous Presidents doing these types of things I hope someone present will ask for actual historical cases showing it. I’m 70 years old and can’t recall a time when an American President brought in unelected billionaires and allowed them access to private & personal information. But hey, maybe I’m having one of those “ senior moments “……

As for wanting to name himself director of the Kennedy Institute and ushering in a “ golden age “ that is just so much of a psychological “ tell “. And coming from a person with a golden toilet……

Governing is not what trump is about. Being noticed is. Being the center of attention is what he craves. For him to be forgotten… just an after thought… would be the worst punishment. Worse than incarceration.

I don’t agree with many of the executive actions. However, the decision to cap administrative overhead costs on research grants to 15% is an excellent and well-balanced call. The system was bloated, and out of control. The savings can be used to support more research investigators, foster innovation, and collaborative activities.

I think he wants to hobnob with the upper tiers of the art world - people that routinely shun him, even with the title of President attached to his name. My guess is that a whole lot of those folks will just say, “no, thanks” to Kennedy Center events as long as he is in charge.

Well, this is part of it (from the article):

In his Truth Social post, he also brought up the topic of queer people, something he has raised repeatedly since being sworn into office, saying that the Kennedy Center “featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth – THIS WILL STOP”.

Don’t know if that actually happened or he’s parroting some rightwing meme. Maybe he wants to appoint himself chairman to satisfy his lowbrow tastes. So we’ll see a Lee Greenwood retrospective, and a revival of “Cats.” Here’s a statement on the Kennedy Center web page about what he said (TPM won’t show the preview):

The prediction is that a lot of research facilities will go under with that stricture. Don’t know how the economics works.

So is this a page out of the Hitler playbook? I seem to recall that ole Adolph would throw galas with all the top artists of the day to show the commoners the overwhelming support he got from the beautiful people.

Most of the core facilities are already not doing well under the current system. They are largely unused, highly dependent on subsidies, and drain resources that could be used to support research personnel and activities. Facilities should be embedded in active research programs and not be service centers.

Thom Tillis is in competition with Tommy Tuberville for “The Most Stupid Senator.” It seems to be a neck and neck race.
