Arizona Official Stymied In Sending Ballots Amid Poll Closures

Arizona’s top election officials have been enmeshed in a legal fracas surrounding mail-in voting after the state’s most populous county announced 78 poll closures just days before its primary. The state lacked sufficient cleaning supplies to keep all the locations open amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Great. Postponing elections? Just fine.

Creative solutions to make the vote happen on time? Illegal, must be stopped.

We’re fucked. Unless dotard dies of Corona, there will be no November election.

When there’s a fire in the crowded theater where the only specific instruction is “Silence,” it is forbidden to call theater goers to the exits. Argument from silence Trump’s* common sense.

There is enough time – between now and November 3 to solve this problem for the general IMO. And it needs to be resolved.

if i understand what the constitution states regarding ‘missed’ elections - the president/vice president and all of the house would no longer have standing on their respective effective dates in january 2021. in addition, 23 republican and 10 democratic senators would be ‘stymied’. which would leave a majority for the good guys to appoint the new executive officers. if you believe the constitution.

Barely enough time, but yes the problem can be solved with something called vote-by-mail, which we’ve used successfully here in Washington state and other states have as well. Not a perfect system, but it’s the best available for expanding the franchise and defusing ID checks and other voter suppression efforts.

Of course, the states that have installed voting machines through lobbying efforts by those machine manufacturers would have to wake up and kick those bastards out. So I’m not holding my breath we’ll get it changed this cycle. But it has to happen eventually, to get this country back on track.

Republican strategy is to reduce voter turnout. What’s really scary is we’re beginning to hear veiled mentions of postponing elections. How soon will the president raise the possibility?

States that have a vote by mail absentee ballot have an easy solution, where they just put every voter on the absentee voter list and send them all a ballot to submit by mail. If the law allows it they can just do it, otherwise it will take the legislature acting to make it happen. Republican administrations just may be forced into it, especially if some senior citizens sue…time is of the essence in these circumstances and the optics will look very poor. There may be a silver lining that gets more ballots out into the hands of people, and that makes sure the November election still happens…both of these work against Republicans of course, but that should be irrelevant as they will make things better for all Americans.

Send the ballots.

It’s long past time that Democrats let the courts stop them from doing the right thing when Republicans don’t do the same.

I’m pretty sure only Congress can cancel a federal election

A thread from UC Davis Con Law Prof -

And even if the election was delayed, Trump's and Pence's terms would still end at noon on January 20, 2021. If no election has been held by that point, the Speaker of the House would assume the powers of the presidency under the Presidential Succession Act. https://t.co/S0hQ7W1pyM

HOW many times do I have to remind Law Professors that EVERYTHING they learned in Law School is no longer valid under the Roberts Calvinball Court???

The ONLY thing that matters in ANY given Decision is whether it will further the Right.

Jesus F-ing H-Christ. This issue of whether the Supremes were actually arbiters of Law vice unelected politicians was solved with Bush v. Gore.

It’s strange to hear this happening in AZ. I voted by mail in every election when I lived there, it was Pima not Maricopa, but I have a hard time believing that they don’t have the infrastructure to handle this. The ‘excuse’ they are using for not doing this is that you must request a ballot to vote by mail in AZ, sounds like they could easily wave this, so what’s up? Who will this benefit?

I am a huge proponent of vote by mail, having moved to WA after living in AZ, where I also always voted by mail. It’s the way to go and should be done for this years presidential election, but you can bet the Rs will not allow it

IMO the banana-republicans would consider it a feature and not a bug. They would adore the voter suppression.

The same people voting restrictions always benefit: the GOP.

You can request the mail in ballot online.
