Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson on Tuesday denied motions by Maricopa County and Governor-elect Katie Hobbs to sanction the lawyers of unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake.
While the judge was unwilling to throw out the law for Lake, because as he says “There are purported facts under the law” with Lakes filing, when it comes to discretionary actions, such as sanctions, he knows which side he’s on. His appointer, Jan Brewer, was a vicious right-winger, intending to cause hurt to liberals and Latinos.
And at trial it was demonstrated that she had nothing. Lake and her lawyers just dodged a huge bullet. The lawyers may get it but I doubt that she will and thus the abuse of the legal system will continue . . . But the legal expenses of $33,040.50 plus 7.5% interest until paid in full for expert witness testimony is not chump change either.
Hobbs is inaugurated next week. That is very important. Most of us are looking at this with two prisms. Hobbs’ ascension to the Governor’s Mansion and Kari Lake’s menacing nature and possibilities
Now I’m not saying I agree with or endorse this group’s actions and views, although I can certainly understand why POC might want to be armed and have firearm skills. But damn, it’s so obvious that this is a thing because the people involved are black.
Ok maybe it is related. Lake and her lawyers are white, Christian (at least technically) and “conservative”, so it makes sense that judges would take it somewhat easier on them, because of this. There’s long been a bias that way.
The facts aren’t outlined but I would bet the ruling is consistent with the law. Sanctions are really hard to get. If they weren’t the courts would be overwhelmed with motions for sanctions.
It was enacted in response to Covid and expired by its own terms. Apparently the Supreme Court now has the authority to declare an epidemic emergency and to extend Executive Orders.
WELCOME, Md. — The complaints about the property on Fire Tower Road were urgent but not too far out of the ordinary in this rural stretch of Southern Maryland: Earsplitting gunfire, endangered cows, a stray bullet that pierced a neighbor’s equipment shed.
But that was before the would-be heirs to a mythical North African empire moved in, claiming their dominion extends not only over the lost island of Atlantis but also over five acres in Charles County.
The episode began when gun enthusiasts started getting together on Sundays for target practice at the wooded property of 64-year-old Byron Bell.
From the images in the piece, all the members are black, and there’s a link to another article:
Yeah, again, they’re pretty nuts, but not the point. White-dominated gun nut groups and militia do far crazier things and no one hassles them, or gives them a slap on the wrist. I mean, the Bundy clan and basically half of northern Idaho.
I was thinking of inexperienced shooter, and even experienced shoots not knowing what’s behind what they’re shooting at.
I just got back from taking a drive to park where I usually walk. And yes the river is frozen. As I turned into the driveway that would take my past the archery range I saw a guy out there practicing. It reminded my of when I started walking down there 10 years ago. The archery range butted up to the trail. They moved it for some reason, can’t think why having runners, walkers, cyclists using the trail that abuts an archery range would be dangerous.
Bows and arrows don’t kill people. People kill people. And the only way to stop a bad guy with a bow and arrow is a good guy with a bow and arrow. So next time you take a walk there, bring a bow and arrow. FreeDUMB!
