A new report from the inspector general of the U.S. park police paints a chaotic picture of law enforcement formulating a plan to clear Lafayette Square in Washington D.C. and put up higher fencing amid protests last summer, a scheme foiled by poor coordination, unauthorized use of tear gas and a surprise visit by President Donald Trump.
Ummmm…OK…but WHY were there ‘plans were already in motion on June 1, 2020 to clear out protesters and ring the park with higher, anti-scale fencing to separate officers and protesters.’ They weren’t allowed in the Park? Peaceful or not? And this was happening then but they IGNORED all the signs before Jan. 6??? Huh?
Then, even before the commander had given the final warning, Secret Service, the USPP and Arlington County Police Department civil disturbance units all deployed, visibly surprising many of the protesters. The warnings, hard to hear and incomplete as they were, also did not point protesters towards a safe pathway to exit that would have allowed them to avoid the oncoming officers.
This maybe a form of kettleling. This was used the St Louis City Police back 2017(?). You corral the protesters without an exit, so that you can use your tear gas, arrest people for not dispersing, and knock a few heads.
In the StL case they kettled protesters that were leaving a protest. They trapped them in an intersection. The police also arrested restaurant patrons that were on the sidewalk having smoke.
It was a good thing that the Rolling Stones cancelled their concert because the StL cops arrested the Rolling Stones audio engineer and some lighting guys, they were smoking on the sidewalk. The cops also arrested residents an apartment building that came down to see what was going on.
So just because the National Park Police had a plan it sounds like Metro and the officers from the Correction’s riot goon squad had other ideas.
I skimmed this article and saw a bunch of references to police miscommunication, chaos, agency turf wars, clusterfuckery and general mayhem and thought I was reading about January 6th. Must have been a trial run.
When hiring is based on “does he/she look the part” instead of competence this is what you get. Remember “Heck of a job Brownie”? R’s don’t seem to care about compentent folks running things like D’s do. I remember Bill Clinton making the pitch that he would put someone in charge of FEMA who understood emergency management and that was almost 30 years ago.
What a mess. Is this a consequence of Trump impulsively deciding to make a speech on the spot and everyone else being forced to jump to it to see that Trump doesn’t get himself and other people killed?
