Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) revealed that she is a survivor of sexual assault during an emotional Instagram livestream on Monday night while she was laying out the trauma she experienced when ex-President Donald Trump’s supporters, some of whom were flaunting military-grade weapons and zip ties, were rampaging through the Capitol halls last month.
It’s understandable why she is so mad at the Republicans in Congress…it’s like she’s stuck in the house with her abuser and can’t get away. They have encouraged innumerable threats against her, and I doubt they could handle what they have put her through. She’s got to be a strong person to put up with all of that, and it sounds like she’s reached the point that she’s done trying to play nice with them.
And, shout out to Katie Porter, she continues to impress and is going to be a real leader in Congress if she can hold her seat.
“Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly called on Cruz to resign for his role in the lead-up to the violent siege, telling him at one point that ‘you almost had me murdered.’ Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) demanded the Democrat ‘immediately apologize’…”
These are the predictable acts of every wife beater, domestic abuser, and rapist who ever lived.
“YOU’RE the problem!”
Enough.
Not this time.
A reckoning is coming, and these criminals will be held accountable.
She was triggered. She is a real, brave survivor. I love who she is.
And, @drriddle, What you said about Katie Porter! I really enjoyed seeing her smile and talk to AOC about how she’s (Katie"s) a mom, and she and AOC talked about (AOC) being a good mom, someday, too.
Every time I see images of zip tie guy, my first thought as a woman has been what he was going to do with the AOC and The Squad had he been able to capture them. There’s a very long, disturbing, and disgusting history in this country of what angry white men do to “uppity” women of color who “don’t know their place”. I shudder every time I think about it.
Also, I have no trouble stating as fact that AOC wasn’t the only sexual assault victim in that chamber who was terrorized about what these thugs might be about to do to her. I’m sure many members of Congress are struggling with PTSD. What’s worse is the torture of having to continue to work in the same building as people many of them suspect/know were in on the plot.
She won by 4.2 in 2018 and 7.0 in 2020. She seems well positioned to hold onto her seat, at least pending whatever California does with redistricting this year. But yeah, Katie Porter is a superstar and Maxine Waters needs to eat some shit for excluding her from the Financial Services Committee.
I am fascinated by the glimpses of our congress people’s working relationships; to see who they turn to and who looks out for their colleagues.
When AOC needed refuge she turned to Katie Porter and it was Amy Klobuchar who Tammy Duckworth trusted to send an extraction team to move her from her office to the secure room with the other senators.
I wonder if we could get Cruz and Roy together, tie them down to chairs and make them watch another Woman’s March with them as the their honored targets, er guests?
I’m so glad she got help. I have questions about Officer Unfriendly there. The whole thing is just horrifying and I have no snark for it right now. Nobody should have to be in fear of his or her life in the GOD DAMN UNITED STATES CAPITOL. Hiding and wondering if she’s going to live through the day, God. I hope the brief today means the House managers will be coming in breathing fire.
I’m a “small pharma” Rep. Left big pharma in ‘13 and have never looked back.
Porter’s analysis of the relationship between small and big pharma seems to miss one important point - she seems to imply that small biotech companies are being preyed upon by big pharma. The reality is that the reason the vast majority of biotechs exist is to eventually be bought out. That’s the business model - develop a new treatment with investors not seeing a return for sometimes 20 years, then sell out and cash out.
It is a mutually beneficial and consensual relationship.
I am not arguing that pharma doesn’t need to be better regulated - from a purely selfish standpoint, I want job security and you can only fleece Americans for so long before they revolt against you. Drugs should be accessible to every American without causing any financial hardship. But I think she gets it wrong about the nature of the symbiotic relationship between big and small pharma.
