A fifth member of the House Republican caucus is calling it quits.
Rep. Mike Conaway (R-TX), who was first elected in 2004, is expected to announce his retirement during an event in west Texas on Wednesday, Politico reported.
Annnnd another one bites the dust. Good riddance to bad trash. And I guess I’ll be sending another ten bucks to Roy Moore. Gotta keep that cockroach engaged.
We make note here of GOP members retiring or choosing not to run for another term. I assume we highlight this because we’re glad to be rid of them, and it represents a possible Dem gain of their seat.
However, I don’t see Josh run articles on Dem retirements or drop outs. Are any happening we just ignore, preferring not to think about it? Is this solely a GOP phenomenon?
Drip, drip, drip. Can we have a wave please. Who really wants to be defending Trump at town halls? Not to mention their own lack of ethics, morality, or common sense.
Good point. FWIW, nobody is retiring in the MA delegation and I am pretty sure no Dems in the rest of New England is retiring or I would have caught it in the news.
There was a very informative comment about this a few days ago that would be a great jumping off point for a TPM article.
In general, being the minority party in the House sucks. I look at Republican retirements as evidence that they are convinced that they will remain in the minority after 2020.
This district would be very difficult to flip, so the most optimistic take I can offer is the chance that Rep Conaway retirees will show some concern for his legacy and start to push back on Trump.
ALL of these “retiring” Congresspersons will just be replaced in the general election by a Reich-Winger, bomb-throwing, Trump-sucker who will scream about hordes of “illegal im’grants” and “commie-fag demoncrats” coming to rape your daughters, take away your guns, burn your bible, and force you to become a homosexual. (and we all know that you NEED your Bible to justify using your Gun to rape your OWN daughter, thus proving you “ain’t no Homo!!!” just as Rambo Jesus intended.)
These GOP reps may be retiring but the vast majority are still plenty comfortable either defending racists tweets or explaining how they’re not responsible for racist tweets of their party leader. They can’t all be Liz Cheney-like in their defense of bullshit.
There is some hope to Texas moving to the left. I doubt Midland will elect a Democrat but it might be possible.
Olson’s district could easily go blue, and as I noted before, a colleague of mine is being courted to run against Carter, from southern Williamson County, just north of Austin. Carter’s seat is one of five targeted this year. MJ Hegar, who is now running against Cornyn, nearly beat Carter in 2018. I know Carter, and he is well liked, but he will be 78 this year, and may not want to continue the fight, either.
