n today’s FAFO: Tom Cotton, blowhard Senator from Arkansas, who voted against disaster relief five times is now begging Donald Trump to “reconsider” his denial of disaster relief for Arkansas after his very red Trump-supporting state was hit with damaging tornados.
Cotton joined the rest of the Arkansas elected officials in writing a groveling letter to Trump begging for that sweet, sweet gubmint money.

Sincere question. Is there some kind of official process for bringing biological research specimens into the country that is more formal than packing them in one’s luggage? I’ve had a packet of vegetable seeds confiscated at the border.

The states are the laboratories of democracy. The test case(s) for the states to pick up the tab for any natural disasters that chance to come their way. We’ll see how that works out for the states that take more from the federal purse than they pay into it.

Pritzker keeps earning points with me. Big time. This is the way. Bukele needs to understand that for all the fear and loathing our 4-year regime changes can cause for our country with our (at this point former) allies, it can also mean righteous vengeance can and will be visited upon those who participate in and assist an American regime’s attempts to undermine and destroy American democracy.
There can be no forgiveness for what Bukele has done and is doing and his eventual punishment must be considered an imperative and a sealed deal. And yes, if it takes punishing the country with an embargo that makes the Cuban embargoes look quaint in order to convince everyone in the country that he’s done and our demands that he face the Hague must be met, then so be it. The message MUST be sent that tin pot dictator countries are NOT permitted to gleefully participate in the undermining and destruction of this country’s democracy, systems of rights and due process and Constitutional order. Sorry…but that message HAS to be brutal. It is the only language that will be understood by people like Bukele.

It seems like anything abnormal or normal for that matter about one’s self at a US border crossing is enough to get ICE on one’s case. I don’t know what formal process Petrova could’ve used for her frog embryos. Just the fact she is of Russian origin and a well known scientist at Harvard is enough by itself to get her in trouble with ICE. I’m sure there is some kind of formal mechanism for entry of biological material. I expect the frogs were headed for her lab and not a neighborhood pond

Its been many years since I imported “biologics” (the definition of biologics by Customs seems to vary by geographic entry area, unfortunately) so my experience (and memory) may be sorely outdated. For a purified common protein (of biologic source), I had to work at a known/accredited research college or industry (pharma), provide reams of paper on justification, description, alternate sources available (none), biohazard designation, etc., with perjury/criminal prosecution threat signature and countersignatures. Did all that, and my package was still embargoed and I was threatened with criminal prosecution. Got the package eventually, with no explanation. There may have been lawyers involved.
I can only imagine the process being much more detailed if it was a living biologic, with a standard embargo and more threats. I do not know if Petrova did the paperwork, but at worst they should have confiscated the frog embryo sample and maybe a small fine, like they do daily for tourists entering the country with plants/animals, not immediate detention and deportation.
