Angus King Is ‘Reluctant’ To Nix Filibuster, But Would Do So For Voting Rights | Talking Points Memo

Sen. Angus King (I-ME) on Sunday said that although he is “very reluctant” to nuke the filibuster, he is willing to nix the legislative procedure to pass voting rights legislation.

The sane half of Maine chimes in.

Correctly.

"I will fight to represent the people of West Virginia, to seek bipartisan compromise no matter how difficult and to develop the political bonds that end divisions and help unite the country we love.”

Translation, I have no problems with Republicans doing whatever they can to tear down democracy.

King clearly articulates the most insidious element of this GOP voter suppression evil. - the granting of a nullification option to state legislatures … a craven dishonest feature that would give legislatures the ability to say F-you to the majority and essentially “veto” the will of the people.

If only this headline said “Manchin” instead of King.

What we are doing with this legislation is fighting the poisonous partisan legislation the GOP has passed in the states. It’s not partisan - it is anti-partisan, Joe. Get a fucking clue.

Thank you Angus for getting it.

Here’s the thing Dems and the media need to start hammering Manchin and Sinema with every time they publicly kneel to this false Idol of Bipartisanship: “How many state leges have the filibuster?”

I’m willing to bet that not a single state lege – you know, the ones ramming through NOT BIPARTISAN democracide – has the vaunted filibuster.

Why then, Sens. Manchin and Sinema, are you perfectly happy to allow “partisan” rollbacks of voting rights if you so worship “bipartisanship”?

It. Don’t. Compute.

Everybody – from Speaker Pelosi to Leader Schumer to WV and AZ Dem Party leaders to local and national reporters – needs to start publicly squeezing them like a tube of toothpaste to explain that blatant contradiction.

Manchin and Sinema you’ve now seen what Republican controlled legislature are willing to do to make voting harder, to make voters jump through hoops to get an absentee ballot, and then after you get to stand in line for hours, your vote can be diminished because the state legislature “thinks” that there was something hincky in the process. When a Texas legislator is OK with using a racist term to maintain control over the voting roll, or a Arizona legislator publicly states that they think it’s not important on allowing all eligible voters the right to vote, but it’s the quality of the voter, and not the quantity of votes that matter.
All of this things that were proposed, and some passed were partisan measures. So how many people need to be disenfranchised before you figure out that Republican will have no qualms squashing your voters?

Some state legs are so badly gerrymandered they can override a veto, with only republican votes.

I you want to know what is in the “For the People Act”,

Provisions:

Personally I think parts of 1, parts of 2, and number 6 are the most important parts. Rest would be nice but standard rules (1), paper trail (2) and no gerrymandering (6) are the most critical. Others would be good (i.e. Ethics requires release of 10 years of tax returns.) Please start dealing Dems!

I’m curious how much bipartisanship feeds 100 hungry West Virginian kids and gets jobs to 10 unemployed West Virginian adults.

“It’s a 800- or 900- or 1,000-page bill. There are clearly some things I think need to be negotiated,” King said. “And I think Joe Manchin realizes that.”

The problem is that whatever real criticisms there are of the bill, none of Manchin’s opposition that he articulated today is about them. It’s solely about it being a Democrat-only bill and having to change the filibuster to pass it.

Thank you Angus.
Voting is just a tad more important than Mitch’s treasured super majority.
Simple majority voting on legislation makes more sense to me anyway. I don’t think a 60 vote hurdle to get to the actual vote makes any sense. Now if some senator wants to bore the chamber to tears to block a vote… …
Btw
Currently the Goobers aren’t interested in governing anyway. They’re still dealing with fantasy and trump’s super sized ego.
Fyi
Today is the 77th anniversary of D-Day. If you know of a WW2 veteran … show them some sort of respect. My father flew missions (110 to be exact) off the Escort Carrier USS Anzio (CVE-57) in the Pacific Theater in major battles. I count myself very lucky to be alive.

Can someone give me a listing of the 10 GOP Senators (by name) Manchin is looking for?

> “The other piece, though, that isn’t being talked about is, a lot of states are considering changes that the legislature could essentially overturn the results of an election in their state,” King added.

I really can’t imagine why so few people are noticing this horrendous trend!!! How could this be permitted?
