While the constantly mounting covid-19 death toll is frightening, it’s maybe even more disturbing that Trump’s base, some 44% of all Americans, still think he’s the greatest. GOP hollowing out the educational system is working!!

Well the Viet Nam war started in 1955 and I born sort of in the middle of it, so I have memories of it on the news, that we watched before and after dinner.
And @kelaine is correct that our idea of normal will change. It will change because everything changes, whether there’s a pandemic or not. It’s the speed of change that keep us all feeling off kilter.
And just to add to this change meme Republicans and others on the far right keep repeating the we need to go back to our roots, Christian values and all that, but what they don’t see or admit is that their idea of normal was not normal for everyone. Their stylized version of a Norman Rockwell print never was normal.

And the flip side of this is that Trump’s claim that “he alone can fix this, us, or the US”. Again it’s the Chrisianist that believe that through him all good things flow.

People who know what they’re talking about say this is a “2-year pandemic”. Opening states now is a death sentence for thousands more. The Trump Crime Syndicate is totally fine with workers dying like flies; the only thing that matters is the stock market. We’re in for 2 years of distancing and masks. The virus is an equal-opportunity contagion.

Eisenhower started sending “Observers” to Vietnam in 1955.
Kennedy expanded this mission, putting “Advisors” into South Vietnamese combat units, and Johnson turned it into a full-blow war in 1964 after the “Gulf of Tonkin” resolution that authorized him to do so (based on an outright Lie. The “incident” never happened.)

Every death reverberates throughout each community. For every person who succumbs to this disease, their circle of friends and family feel the loss as though violence has been sued against them.
The staggering loss of life in such a short time will alter how we see ourselves culturally and politically. These redefinitions are already happening as evidenced in polling data that measures how we should or should not reopen businesses, schools, social events, and the like. In every situation, whether being touched by the tragic loss of a friend or loved one, or the chance each person takes venturing outdoors, we reflect on how we came to this. We reflect upon how we used to enjoy the company of others who are no longer with us. We reflect upon what could have been done to disrupt the spread of disease.
Elections have consequences, as the old saw goes, and this one will be hugely consequential. I look forward to new and competent leadership. It would seem that at least 55% of the electorate feels the same.
