Ambassador’ing Is Hard, But Gordon Sondland Was A ‘Comical’ Bumbler | Talking Points Memo

When he wasn’t pushing Ukraine to open investigations that would benefit President Donald Trump’s reelection chances, EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland was breaching security protocols, showing up unprepared at diplomatic events, and generally making a bit of a mess.

This will play well into the Republican idea that Sondland was a loose cannon, but it will take some spin to do that, and to separate him from Trump. It’s no surprise that he’s a crappy ambassador, political appointees like this usually are. We really should get a law where ambassadors have to have experience in order to be appointed, we’re way past the days where it makes any sense to put political donors into seats.

Call me crazy, call me foolish, but the habit of “buying” ambassadorships is just a shitty idea and tradition, no matter what the party affiliation!!

Sondland is the best ambassador a $1 million bribe can buy.

I disagree. Assuming we aren’t going to get money out of politics any time soon, ambassadorships are a great way of keeping idiots like Sondland from screwing up the work of government. I mean, would you prefer that he have a policy position somewhere in the State Department? Of course not.

Every nation treats most ambassadorships the same way – as a ceremonial position that is awarded as a political plum — and rely on embassy staff to actually get the work done. It doesn’t matter if you appoint them because they gave you money, or because they gave you an early endorsement, or because they are friends with people you want on your side. “Ambassador” is never going to be a merit-based position, period.

Sondland’s appointment as EU ambassador was a reflection of how little regard Trump has for the EU itself – and its not like Trump would have gone looking for someone competent to do the job otherwise.

I had a modicum of sympathy for him (very small, but still) thinking he was mostly just a patsy for Trump and starry-eyed about what his $1MM bought him. No more. He was not just in waaaay over his head, his hubris made him a true risk. That, combined with his likely failure to have truly come clean with his “refreshed recollection” makes me hope he ends up in jail.

So, can someone explain why the Ambassador to the European Union was involved with Ukraine, which is not part of the EU??

Great phrase. Sondland is completely on brand for Team Trump.

Once again, an example showing that making lots of money does not necessarily translate into knowing squat about anything other than making money in a particular way, and even then, luck plays a large part in most instances.
Trump seems to assume a big bank balance = a big brain. That’s why he exaggerates both of his, but it doesn’t work.

Geography is not a strong suit for the intellectually challenged.

To them, it’s all “over there”. As in the “Country of Africa”…
