Alleged Mar-a-Lago ‘Spy’ Trial Gets Off To Surreal Start | Talking Points Memo

Imagine how much easier it is for a foreign adversary to plan a terrorist attack, armed with the knowledge that any infiltration or other “inside” shenanigans are that much harder for us to pull off.

The grounds for an appeal are already being created. Why the judge is letting her go it alone is impossible to figure out. She sounds completely incapable of defending herself. The only possible reason is that she in fact speaks English well and has been involved in US court proceedings sufficiently to understand the system. I doubt she’s been involved in criminal cases previously, so it sounds more like a bad choice by the judge.

Once again this goes back to Dim Son’s regime of error when his VP and “turd blossom” conspired to out a deep undercover operative focused on Iran’s nuclear program, Valerie Plame. How many in her network died because of that evil shit just to give Dim Son cover for his lies about Iraq importing yellow cake from Niger?

Because defendants have rights when it comes to that. The judge has two public defenders in the courtroom to assist, but if she refuses them, he can’t compel her.

That’s his backup for when she tries to appeal based on that.

Judge Roy Altman was appointed by Trump. His first nomination was returned to Trump out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Trump renonimnated him and he was approved on the second pass.

So this isn’t hard to figure out.

I know. But a court can still deny the right to self-represent. If it couldn’t, why do courts hold hearings when a defendant requests going forward without counsel? The next question is, if she’s showing signs of mental illness, has an evaluation been done? I haven’t seen anything on that.

She didn’t have underclothes when arrested?

Click through to the linked article, there are better details there. An evaluation was I believe recommended by the public defenders, but she refused.

It’s not a win-win situation for a court. If you force them against their will to use counsel, then you’ve given grounds for appeal based on that…

Heh. Used to drive right by it. Had a friend who was a DI. He confirmed your take.

Agreed, but I didn’t think you could refuse a mental evaluation. The judge shouldn’t be proceeding if there’s a good possibility she’s not competent, especially if she’s representing herself. This is getting weirder.

Trump attracts insane people like Devil’s Tower attracted UFO’s in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” It’s just a sort of cosmic resonance.

And it may well get there. Having her demonstrate questionable behavior and getting that on the record is a good way to back up potential eventual orders for a competency evaluation.

Not that it probably would change anything, she’s not nuts, she’s just playing that for the cameras.
