Alex Jones and his conspiracy website InfoWars must pay $100,000 in legal fees in a defamation case brought by the father of a boy killed in the Sandy Hook shooting massacre, a Texas judge ordered recently.
And unless it’s reduced to a judgment and severed from the remainder of the case, it probably isn’t collectable until the whole case is over. And ultimately, Jones and InfoWars are going to end up filing for bankruptcy. Still, every little bit of debt helps!
Most trial court judges don’t like to sever discrete parts of a lawsuit because it exposes them to appeals that would otherwise have to wait until after trial. Just guessing, but the judge in this case likely sees the hefty sanction award as a pressure point to encourage the defendants to settle the case.
