You’ll have to ask the NYT. The news media in general is strikingly bad at reporting science because science deals in probabilities and can be maddeningly (to some) provisional in it’s findings. The news media also have a tendency to personalize (human interestize) the research. I don’t give a shit what the primary researcher did in high school or whether she lived for 9 months inside a crevasse at the South Pole. And the news media tends to sensationalize scientific results and add the provisional considerations way down at the end. Some are better than others. Pick your poison.
