Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) predicted last year that, even without a Senate conviction, President Trump learned a lesson from the impeachment he faced for using the powers of the presidency to manipulate an election.
Rumor has it Biden, and others in his administration, the DOJ, IRS, etc, won’t be forthcoming as to Trump’s tax returns being turned over to Congressional investigators. You know, because. Just because.
I suspect once Merrick Garland is confirmed as AG, the strategy will become clearer. Right now, it’s all speculation, but I can guess, since Garland’s confirmation is pretty well confirmed even if the GOP don’t cooperate, that plans are already in place for what he goes after through the DOJ.
I’m willing to wait it out. They can run, but they can’t hide.
As the Proud Boys are indicted for conspiracy to obstruct the Electoral College vote, the growing magnitude of impeachment charges makes it clear that no one can ever be allowed to try to do this again.
Agree with the article. There needs to be serious consequences, or their side is going to just keep trying until they get a successful coup. As soon as that happens, this country’s form of government (as broken as it may be) is done. We’ll be no better than N. Korea, Russia, or Iran at that point, and rightfully be labeled as international pariahs.
someone said…‘The wheels of justice grind slowly’’ but they grind on’…or words to that effect… take your time and get it right, when you hit them , hit them s hard they can’t get up… anything else is just sound and fury.
I’m not sure what Congressional investigators could do with Trump’s tax returns at this point that the NY AG and SDNY aren’t already doing and they’re the ones who will get access to them first in any case.
Lindsey Graham seems to be getting a free pass on this - he also tried to strongarm Georgia into flipping their votes and lied about the election results.
The Biden Administration, to my knowledge, hasn’t really shown their hand yet on this, largely because they need Garland in place to direct the investigation, and also because it’s prudent not to comment on an ongoing investigation. Also, Biden has clearly stated he would not be interfering in any way with DoJ, unlike Trump, and he meant it. I suspect we’re just going to have to wait for Garland to eventually comment.
One of the problems with a criminal trial for the man who refers to himself as the 45th POTUS is that he has thoroughly poisoned any jury pool that he is likely to draw, and jurors would fear for their lives if they convicted him. (This is the metaphorical, if not actual dilemma the GOP Senate fears.) His minions, on the other hand, are much less protected. By the time the cases come to trial, there may be enough of a public change of heart that he can be charged, but for the time being, he would use it to create another coup. I’m not suggesting that he not face consequences, I’m just acknowledging that it will be tricky.
There’s always talk of crafting laws requiring Presidential nominees to divulge a certain number of years of Federal returns as a condition of being on the ballot.
