A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster (R-NE) insisted to the Omaha World-Herald that the groping allegations from eight women (which have been corroborated by three people speaking on the record) are all lies – but don’t just take his word for it!
In light of the MM article ‘Key Analysis’, I re-submit this from Heather Cox Richardson’s ‘Letter from an American’ this morning:
…[T]he most inspiring approach to the midterms came this week from Michigan state senator Mallory McMorrow. In response to a colleague who had called her a “groomer” in a fundraising email after McMorrow stood up against marginalizing the state’s LGBTQ population, McMorrow made a stand against the hatred and bigotry coming from Republican colleagues. Defining herself as “a straight, white, Christian, married suburban mom,” she called out the “performative nonsense” of her so-called Christian colleagues. “People who are different are not the reason that our roads are in bad shape… or that healthcare costs are too high, or that teachers are leaving the profession,” she said. “We cannot let hateful people tell you otherwise to scapegoat and deflect from the fact that they are not doing anything to fix the real issues that impact people’s lives.”
Recalling historical heroes who tried “to right wrongs and fix the injustice in the world,” she reminded her colleagues that “each and every single one of us bears responsibility for writing the next chapter of history. [We decide] what happens next, and how WE respond to history and the world around us.”
“We will not let hate win.”
In light of this nonsense from the Right, the message from the Left and Center needs to be that which is in bold. It may not get through all the thick skulls, but maybe if it gets through some, November won’t be quite so bad.
The New York Times reports that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) floated invoking the 25th Amendment in a call with top House Republicans on Jan. 8, 2020. And in another call with them on Jan. 10, McCarthy reportedly said he’d tell Trump, who was facing impeachment from House Democrats at that point, that “it would be my recommendation you should resign.”
Dear Lord, Kevin had one, count it one, good and legal thought-and then he backed away.
I know that I wasn’t the only one back in 2015/16 that thought that Trump would be bad for the GOP, but just like any hormone raging teenager the GOP didn’t listen. So this is how we got here.
Senator Lana Theis accused me by name of grooming and sexualizing children in an attempt to marginalize me for standing up against her marginalizing the LGBTQ community...in a fundraising email, for herself.
So glad to comment!
We need to hear this from Sen. Schumer and Leader Hoyer and Sen. Durbin and Vice President Harris and Justice Jackson and more, but we need the Democratic leadership to lead, now.
I don’t believe he is so much a coward, as he is simply delusional. The emperor was told he isn’t wearing any clothes and the denial is SO strong that he cannot confront the truth of his lack of clothing.
This is part of his dementia/sociopathy. It’s also performative and is probably generating a lot of ire among his supporters, as in the ‘How Dare Piers…!!!’ category.
