ABC Confirms That One More Candidate Will Mean Two Debate Nights

The third round of Democratic debates, hosted by ABC News, will take place in Houston on September 12 — and 13, if one more candidate qualifies.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1244136

The debate should be limited candidates who are constituents of no other incumbent Republican.

Two nights of debates is NOT a good format…for example, the second night debaters will be forewarned while the first night debaters are the guinea pigs. Additionally, it is time for all Dem candidates to debate en masse!

Guess we’re getting a little closer to where the rubber meets the road, but still too damn many especially for one night. Wake me up when this is over.

The one who talks the fastest gets the mostest.

Ugh! Too much Democracy! Why can’t our betters just choose for us so that I can get back to Instagram to see what Kim and Kanye do next???

Top 5 at one venue, the rest at a different venue. Then we can watch the real candidates and see a highlight reel of the rest if we want.

They need higher thresholds to winnow out the obvious and something to balance the Uber rich who can buy unlimited ad time to gin up donations

Yang’s signature policy is what he calls the “Freedom Dividend”, a form of universal basic income (UBI) of $1,000 a month for every American adult over age 18. Yang believes UBI is a necessary response to the rapid development of automation, which is increasingly leading to workforce challenges. He believes that job displacement by automation is what led to the election of Donald Trump in 2016.

And sparkly unicorns for everybody to beat back the Trump electing economic anxiety!!111!1one!!!

Considering Tom Steyer’s late entry to the race and the lack of attention the media gave him, it’s quite remarkable that he’s only one poll away.

Honestly, two nights of debates wouldn’t be that bad. Just put the top 5 in night 1 so we can skip everyone else on night 2. But for the love of all that’s holy, do not inflict another 10-candidate panel on us.

I’ll consider tuning in once all of the actual candidates are on the stage at once. I am uninterested in being a participating set of ad-viewing eyeballs for the current process of asinine political theater.

The smoke-filled room at the convention had its merits. Certainly we would have no President Trump.

A chicken in every pot means a lot of scrawny chickens out there.

I’m somewhat ashamed to say that I haven’t watched any of the “debates” or even the highlight reels, which always turn out to be takedown zingers that don’t advance any discussion and give credence to the “Dems in disarray” narrative.

I’m not going to watch this one either.

what does being one poll away or two or three mean? I haven’t been following the bylaws of the debate committee…but that term is confounding me

Ugh, why bother with two debates? This is ridiculous.

Dems aren’t going to wait for the most blustery candidate and have massive lead swings like Reps. Drop the 1%ers.

For one thing, this nonsense of it being a debate with 10 people on the stage needs to stop. Just hard stop.

Ten people on a stage doesn’t constitute a discussion of a single issue with presentation of two sides of the issue. I’m tired of the misrepresentation of the concept of a debate. Many Americans are stupid enough not to understand the concept of a debate, we don’t need to help them.

Second, I’m not sure I understand the reluctance of multiple candidates a year-plus prior to the General Election. Does no one remember the GOP run up with their multiple candidates (and somehow Trump still ended up the nominee, but that’s another show)? How is this Dems in disarray when it wasn’t GOP in disarray four years ago?

As I suspected, three other candidates have already dropped out. There will be more. It won’t be worth paying attention to any of this until at least eight more drop out. The only benefit of all of this is hearing the different platforms these folks are running on. If any of their planks get traction, these will still be viable pieces of the puzzle for taking back the WH.

But televising two nights of forums just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense with a MSM that just doesn’t care enough and frames the entire night in ‘gotcha’ questions that are meaningless.

Sad specticle. Beating Trump is all that matters.
