A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) office tells the Dallas Morning News that he won’t be attending the National Rifle Association’s convention in Houston on Friday as he had originally planned. Instead, Abbott will give another press conference at Uvalde, Texas on the elementary school shooting that killed 19 kids–and record a video address for the NRA.
The NRA’s power and influence in this country appears top be shrinking fast. It won’t be long before any association with the NRA will be about as politically advantageous as a membership in the KKK.
Abbott is trying to salvage his campaign for power for November.
I have a suspicion, given his words in the last few days and all the other crap he’s pulled, Texas isn’t gonna buy it. Sadly, we’re still stuck with Cruz. I’m seriously hoping that Beto’s step-up yesterday at the presser is going to get the attention it deserves and really erodes Abbott’s standing in the State. I suspect the parents and families of the victims will want nothing to do with him. Is Beto going any time soon?
And I sincerely hope that Liz Cheney can pull off her re-election. She deserves to be rewarded for her efforts, but I don’t know how Wyoming is viewing her actions.
There hasn’t been much polling but the poll I saw of the race from December wasn’t good for her at all though both candidates were polling at very low numbers.
I wish they would go - they aren’t going because they are going to do a thing about the situation- they just don’t want the bad optics and hassle - they’ll all be there next year
A Texas Department of Public Safety official said responding officers were cautious as they entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas because “they could’ve been shot.
Shouldn’t a willingness to be shot at (and maybe even to be killed) in order to defend the public be the motivation required to serve in the police–as it is in the military?
On MSNBC right now "Police had better stop and regroup before they do another press conference today. They need to take every bit of video from every body camera, every call and come up with a timeline of who did what when. We don’t need to lnow where every shell casing landed now. There’s time enough for that later. Stop telling the narrative you want it to be and get the facts. Then hold your press conference and tell us what actually happened. "
