A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo. Swift Injustice Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is vowing to pardon a man convicted Friday of killing a Black Lives Matter protestor …. before…
I hope the Civil Rights Division has FBI agents camped out nearby (as they did with Derek Chauvin) so they can take Daniel Perry into custody AS SOON AS Abbott pardons him.
Under pressure from Tucker Carlson and fellow Republicans, Abbott made the announcement on Twitter less than 24 hours after Daniel Perry was found guilty of shooting Garrett Foster at a protest in Austin in the summer of 2020.
A bit more on that.
On Friday, a Texas jury unanimously convicted Daniel Perry,a man who shot and killed a Black Lives Matter protester in the summer of 2020. While Texas prides itself as a “stand your ground” state—hence all the recent mass murders—Perry’s act of murder appeared to be brazenly premeditated. In social media posts Perry sneered that he might “kill a few people on my way to work. They are rioting outside my apartment complex” and that he “might go to Dallas to shoot looters.” He argued with a friend over whether that would be legal; that friend warned him that “we went through the same training” and “Shooting after creating an event where you have to shoot” is “not a good shoot.”
Two weeks later Perry ran a red light and “accelerated” into a Black Lives Matter protest in Austin, Texas. As protesters approached Perry rolled down his window and emptied his handgun at 28 year old Air Force veteran Garrett Foster, who was legally carrying an AK-47 rifle. Perry would tell police afterwards that Foster was raising his weapon; none of the witnesses at the scene agreed. The Texas jury determined that Perry had intentionally murdered Foster.
Within 24 hours, Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott took to social media himself to vow that he would pardon Daniel Perry as “swiftly” as he is able to. “Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney,” tweeted Abbott. Abbott announced that he had already requested the Board of Pardons and Paroles to review Perry’s conviction and "instructed the Board to expedite its review…
I was saddened to hear the news that Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) suffered a femur fracture during a parade in Hartford over the weekend. As someone who has been a senator for over a decade, Sen. Blumenthal has tirelessly served the people of Connecticut, and I’m sure his constituents are wishing him a speedy recovery.
It’s important to note that parades and other public events can be quite dangerous, even for those in positions of power. While we don’t know the exact circumstances that led to Sen. Blumenthal’s injury, it’s a reminder to all of us to take care when attending public events.
In times like these, it’s important to remember the resilience of the animal kingdom. I’ve attached a picture of a horse that’s recovered from a similar injury, as a reminder that even in difficult times, we can recover and come back stronger than ever.
I wish Sen. Blumenthal all the best as he recovers from his injury.
Picture suggestion: A picture of a horse that’s recovered from a leg injury, to symbolize strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

In Texas, you can kill whomever you want as long as you kill the people Republicans want dead. The members of the Board of Pardons and Paroles serve at the pleasure of the governor. They simply do not care about justice, only retribution.
Tennessee is saying wait a minute, we’re not done yet with our moves against our citizens. Apparently, Tennessee Republicans are putting pressure on the two committees that will appoint the replacement Reps for Justin Pearson and Justin Jones by stating that they will vote to withhold state funds to those two districts.
We can look forward to Red state governors routinely pardoning right-wing extremist murderers.
This type of thing was characteristic of reactionary judges and other officials in the Weimar Republic, which gave the Nazi Party a feeling of impunity.
The scientific community is well aware of the risk climate change poses to property values along the coasts and in flood- and storm-prone areas. But there’s little evidence that real estate markets have priced in those risks yet.
The Florida real-estate market is going to come to a dead stop once everyone realizes their property is uninsurable due to climate change.
