A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) wants to make it clear that he absolutely is doing something to prevent future school shootings like the horrific massacre in Uvalde last week, and he can prove it with this letter he sent to the commissioner of the Texas Education Agency (TEA) yesterday. In it, Abbott directs the commissioner to, among other things, ensure that school doors are keeping the kids safe.
It follows that the Repug plan is to turn grocery stores, movie theaters, shopping malls, etc into supermax prisons too. Guess it’s the price of freedom.
The election in November will tell InSantis just how wrong he is about the nobody part. I have a feeling a whole bunch of nobodies are going to shout pretty loudly and be heard. Vote Dem, folks.
Schools should be instructed to “conduct weekly inspections of exterior doors to verify they are secure during school hours,” Abbott writes.
Until there’s a fire or other catastrophe and kids die because they couldn’t get away from the fire.
“No, I will not yield, and I’m not gonna yield for my entire five minutes, so don’t ask again!” Cicilline retorted.
Nor should any of us. No more.
The panel has reached out to three people closely tied to ex-vice president Mike Pence asking them to testify publicly, according to CNN: Ex-federal Judge J. Michael Luttig and Pence’s ex-chief counsel, Greg Jacob, plus Pence’s ex-chief of staff, Marc Short.
I’ll miss this for being at work in the Dominican Republic next week. Hopefully, there’ll be some kind of live blog???
Republicans want to ban books and turn your kid’s school into a Supermax, all to protect insane people’s freedom to buy military weapons with no background check. If Democrats can’t win an election on this message, something is not right.
Myopia reveals the flaw in their thinking. Do just schools get to be hardened targets in their Mad Max world? Any place where people gather in large numbers is vulnerable to attack. The world will be a better place when the Abbott, DeSantis, and others like them wear the outcast mantle they so rightly deserve. Now, what to do about it?
Here’s a hint: Axios reports that running with a letter after your name is not sufficient any longer.
“The days of slapping an R next to your name and running some TV ads are over in Georgia,” said Cody Hall, Kemp campaign communications director and senior advisor.
How is this acceptable? On so many levels, this is complete bullshit. It’s the height of we’ll pay you in exposure. I appreciate that the experience gains by working at the White House might actually have some value, but this is insane.
“Our schools right now are a soft target. We have to make sure we harden our schools,” Dixon said, suggesting that some of the unused COVID-19 funds should be put toward that end.
Rinke suggested that former military members should train hall monitors, while Soldano said teachers should be armed and schools should only have one point of entry.
“You guys at the White House had some very hard headlines this week about inflation and about baby formula,” he began. “If there’s nothing new that you can point to in this speech tonight, did you just schedule it to get people talking about something else?”
Gaetz Comes Out With Weird Reason For Not Raising Age Limit On Guns | Crooks and Liars Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) sprang into action after the latest mass school shooting . There is stupid, and then there is Matt Gaetz’s level of stupidity. The Florida Republican somehow said on Thursday that requiring gun buyers to be at least 21 years of age instead of 18-years-old won’t work because it will just delay the mass shooting.
