He’s certainly smarter than Rick Perry but I think their national electoral appeal is pretty similar. And my firm assessment is that Abbott’s not getting in unless Trump gets out, and maybe not even then. Abbott is very clear-eyed about his prospects for electoral advancement. So I’m not really expecting him to roll into the 2024 race.
Imagine if someone did a parody where they claimed another country musician made “pro-woke” comments. The MAGAs would threaten a boycott, then the musician would have to publicly claim they hadn’t said it. . . but what if that musician was actually pretty left-leaning and basically agreed with the parody. Do they renounce the parody or embrace it? Suddenly they have to choose publicly between their career and their morals.
He won’t. As always, national Republican politics is about dominance, and Abbott’s disability would prove disqualifying among the Republican primary electorate. ‘He just doesn’t seem Presidential’, and ‘I dunno, I just don’t think he’s up to the challenge’ will be the dog-whistle versions, while Trump will openly say something like ‘I mean, he can’t even stand up to Putin’…
I can’t wait to read how The Onion covers this story. More than any other story they write, you’ll just have to wonder if it’s real, or is it satire. In this case, it’ll be awfully hard to tell the difference.
