How the HECK is it not a nationwide scandal that Trump told federal law enforcement to divert resources away from drug trafficking and terrorism cases to instead prioritize prosecuting undocumented immigrants for living here?
In reference to the photo at the top we find Steely Dan:
I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said, you must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?
Where did you get those shoes?
Well, I’ve seen 'em on the TV, the movie show
They say the times are changing but I just don’t know
These things are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has for decades done great work prosecuting international money laundering cases. This Florida legislation is overreaching. Going after folks who have work authorization and wire funds to their relatives overseas is beyond the pale.
These types of things [I’m sure there are or will be others] are indeed very important. As JM has counseled, this is an easily understandable political message that needs to be shouted repeatedly: “Trump and his minions are making you less safe!” Not “Be humane to our hardworking immigrant communities.” As true as that is it doesn’t move the needle for far too many people. “These morons want to make YOUR communities more dangerous” should be hammered.
The memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post, also calls for each agency to perform a “comprehensive analysis” to ensure its grant and loan programs are consistent with President Donald Trump’s executive orders, which aimed to ban federal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, and limit clean energy spending, among other measures.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
Trillions of dollars could be on hold, according to an Office of Management and Budget memo.
Of course, the president has no authority over spending. I think that’s what the Constitution said, if someone can manage to fish it out of the shredder and sellotape it back together. Or retrieve it from the toilet.
