A New, But Partial, Gun Ban In MI Legislature Means ‘Capitol Is Not Safe,’ AG Says | Talking Points Memo

The decision of an oversight body to ban openly carried firearms in the Michigan State Capitol — but not all guns — has left the building vulnerable, Michigan’s attorney general said Tuesday.

soooo, if the ‘Capitol is not safe,’ how about the rest of the state?

It isn’t just the terrorists bringing guns. A RWNJ State Rep open carried at the governor’s State of the State address last year. His guns were stolen from his Lansing apartment a few days later.

And the Dom Perignon swilling Speaker of the House during 2019-2020 got arrested in 2018 for trying to take a loaded handgun onto a commercial flight. He said he forgot that his loaded handgun was in his carryon. He was flying back to Lansing from his home where his four young children live.

In what way is the firearms ban partial? The article was unclear.

As a practical matter guns can be banned from the state Capitol but not the state overall. Given recent events and the general violent nuttery of Michigan (e.g. Timothy McVey and his still extant militia) getting guns out of the Capitol is more than worthwhile.

You can still conceal carry, so the gun pan is partial, not the open carry part.

I don’t disagree about ridding the MI Capitol of weaponry.

I do think the quoted passage reeks of I’m-getting-mine-you’re-on-your-ownism, especially in light of the general wingnuttery and recent events.

It always makes me giggle a little when the Senate Majority Leader’s name and something isn’t done or accomplished are in the same story.

The only reason the Republican came out against it is because he realized that these Patriots will murder him too

we are the only western country that refuses to safeguard its own citizens but sends hundreds of thousands of soldiers to “protect” other countries’ citizens.

If I understand what she’s saying, it’s that the Capitol Building security lacks any ability to screen entrants to the building to determine whether they have a valid conceal-carry permit, so that right now anybody can still walk into the building with a concealed weapon, regardless of whether they are allowed to have one.

I respectfully suggest that this information might have been helpful in the actual article above.

Blockquote Santana noted the “sad state affairs” when legislators and members of the public visiting the Capitol feel threatened.

It’s also a sad state of affairs when elementary school children need to have active shooter drills… but nobody is fighting to keep kid’s in schools safer with more restrictive gun control. So it seems like it’s not a priority until it actually happens to politicians.

I guess banning open carry still allows the legislators to carry, too.
I would hope the MI GOP is assigned circular seating.

This won’t change until someone—probably a Democratic legislator—is killed on the floor of the legislature.

I fail to see why this isn’t obviously “terrorism” and treated as such.

  • Lawmakers have admitted that they are afraid to vote against Trump because of violence to them and their families
  • Democrats are wearing bullet-proof vests
  • Trump is still throwing around threats of violence

Why are those under arrest not being interrogated by the FBI to find the details of their plans for the 20th? Giuliani and Brooks should be packing for Guantanamo.

I posted this earlier, but it is STILL relevant to this article;

Yeah, this is NOT ENOUGH.

Especially since it is COMICALLY easy to get a “concealed-carry” permit in Michigan, and To date they have reciprocity agreements with 19 other states on “concealed-carry” permits.
That includes Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Michigan , Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. That’s 19 states where you can obtain a “concealed carry” permit, and the other states will honor it.

This means that ANYONE from ANY of these states can bring a high-capacity hand-gun (or in the case of some of these states a sub-machine gun) in to the Michigan State House under a Concealed-Carry License issued by ANY of these 18 other states (and Michigan itself) LEGALLY, along with extra clips of ammo. They can even carry in MULTIPLE concealed weapons, and cannot be arrested for it.

Madness.

The republicans in our state legislature are out of their freaking minds.

As far as I’m concerned, they’re in league with the fascist insurrectionists.

The Michigan Senate has been controlled by Republicans since 1983. The House has been controlled by Republicans since 1990 with the exception of 4 years (I believe). Correspondingly, Repubs have had the Governorship since Engler pre-1990 with the except of Granholm and up to Whitmer. Repubs have had plenty of years to screw things up and they have by allowing roads and infrastructure to deteriorate while the give $billions to corporations.

They need the nutjobs who wish to carry bullet-spewing weapons and their guns below their belts. Now Repubs are getting nervous since they have done nothing to dter the nutjobs. The state is skewing, however slowly, Democrats. Gerrymandering has been the issue and now civilians will be doing it and not the party in power.

We shall see!

The Democratic leadership, personfied by Whitmer and Nessel, has a dynamic and active image; the GOP leadership–hell, all of them–have the persona of the guy at the dealership trying to sell you an extended warranty, or the customer who calls all the women “Honey.” The men at least; the women are all Karens.
