Ken Chesebro pleaded guilty this morning in Georgia and has agreed to cooperate in Fulton County. A close look at Jack Smith’s January 6 indictment of Donald Trump sheds more light on what the Trump campaign lawyer may know about the 2020 coup attempt and what he could reveal to prosecutors in Georgia.
“An attorney for Chesebro tried to downplay his usefulness after the plea hearing, telling reporters that he didn’t think Trump had any reason to worry at all.”
Given the reasonable assumption that everyone associated with this conspiracy, including the attorneys for the defendants, lies as frequently as they draw breath, I would be very worried if I were Trump.
Alternatively, could this be the lawyer’s ploy to keep Chesebro alive and in good health pending Trump’s trial?
In Arizona, per the Smith indictment, Giuliani allegedly told Chesebro about a conversation he’d had with an unnamed state official where the person said that convening Trump electors in the state would “appear treasonous” absent a “pending court proceeding.”
So it’s not just us!
We thought we were going crazy for a minute there. Yeah, definitely treason-adjacent. That was what our gut said, too.
Thanks to Josh K. That is great info, I don’t have time to wade thru all the legalese.
I was just posting something about this on another thread before I saw this thread:
I can’t say I disagree with all these lawyers who claim J6 rioters got harsher sentences than the higher-ups (Kraken and The Cheese). I especially can’t disagree with them, since every one of them is quoted as admitting to the facts in the case. Their clients were guilty and were following a horribly corrupt, illegal, and treasonous plot.
Of course, it is a different system with a different goal. A GA RICO case, trying to get at the top of the conspiracy pyramid vs lone actors trying to breach our Capitol with violence and stop the federal election process. As far as I know (in the GA case), Powell and The Cheese were trying to convince low-level state actors to pull a fast one…they weren’t loaded up with weapons, cracking skulls, and planning a violent siege of the U.S. capitol.
“News that former Donald Trump lawyer Sidney Powell worked out a plea deal that will keep her out of jail after being a major player in trying to subvert the 2020 presidential election is not being well received by some attorneys for Jan. 6 rioters…”
Excerpt (from one of the J6 defense lawyers):
"The rules we all share are not applied equitably to all. Frequently, deals are made with the highest-ranking players in criminal conspiracies, while the pawns receive the most significant sentences.”
===
So yes, it was a criminal conspiracy. There WERE high ranking players, and there WERE pawns. My guess is during the trials you were claiming these people were peaceful tourists or just exercising 1st Amendment rights to curb-stomp cops.
Gee, how sad for the J6 rioters. Perhaps they’ll learn that there’s a different set of rules for those close to Trump even when they plead guilty? That is, that those “called to duty” on J6 are considered lint in terms of how much Trump or Trump-adjacent “valued” their actions? Nah…
This is all unrolling faster than I thought it would Notice that the Kraken’s plea deal was a little lighter than Chesebro’s. The next one will be a little tougher still, which will be a little easier than the next. Right up the ratline. I would suggest any of the remaining co-defendants would be well advised to talk about a plea with Ms Willis.
As to the J6 rioters, too damn bad. They don’t have any real evidence of Trump’s involvement. Keep your eye on the prize.
Yes, amazing how they STILL pull the wrong lesson from what happened. They are mad at THE GOOD GUYS for punishing them more harshly…but don’t point the finger at the people who used them, abused them, and left them to dangle. There are reasons why the J6 rioters couldn’t/wouldn’t prove the connective tissue between them and ‘the higher-ups’. The higher-ups were busy underbussing the lower-levels and slicing the connective tissue, and the lower-levels didn’t want to implicate and provide proofs of the higher-ups…so they could remain members-in-good-standing of the Traitor Party.
ETA:
And still, how do any RW voters view this whole fustercluck and ignore the fact that not a single person involved in all this criminality has brought forward one shred of exculpatory evidence? It’s all underbussing, claims of witch-hunts. Not a single one, from J6 rioter to Chump himself has brought proofs that they weren’t there. Or divulged all their papers to prove they weren’t at the Willard War Room, weren’t in touch with the Plowed Boiz, didn’t burn the documents (here they are!), didn’t meet as Fraud Electors.
I know if I was innocent I would make very different arguments, and bring very different proofs. Even brainwashed RW voters must be able to see. They deal with losers, deadbeats, and guilty people in their real-lives. The difference in behavior and arguments for innocent people are completely different than how guilty people behave. RW voters are looking at 100s of their party big-wigs fighting court battles…not one acts like an innocent person might. Yet they are steadfast in their hatred of Liberals.
Well just like During the Civil War, hundred of thousands of imbeciles went died in the ditches and Lee, Davis and the rich Plantation owners that they represented ended poorer but otherwise OK.
Maybe, although I’m sure the DA would like to reduce the number of defendants. I’ve read that the county courtroom isn’t big enough to handle the remaining 17 defendants in a single trial. A smaller group also reduces the number of motions to delay and gum up the works.
Maybe the trial could be moved to another venue, but I think attractive plea deals in exchange for testimony will remain for a while yet, to whittle down the size of the case.
