A Congress That Has Made Itself Irrelevant Plays Catch-Up as Trump Unilaterally Pushes U.S. into War

Congress’ hemorrhaging of power was stark Saturday morning, as many Americans woke up to the news that President Trump had initiated war with Iran without bothering to preemptively justify the violence, much less seek congressional authorization.  Any hope that lawmakers would ride to the rescue, as Americans processed the news of Iranian children being killed…

Congress’s GOP. What are they good for? Nothing as the old song goes.

Here’s hoping Al Green has an impeachment motion ready for introduction.

ETA. That would be the congressman, not the Reverend.

Lawmakers have largely responded in accordance to their partisan loyalties, with Democrats — excepting Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) and Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Greg Landsman (D-OH) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) — opposing the violence, or at least demanding further information…

Always good to know the traitors in Dem clothing.

Name them.

Shame them.

Trump’s latest speech seems to channel Foster Brooks.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding something here. Why does Congress need to pass a war powers bill to stop the president? The president needed a AUMF to lawfully do what he did. Congress should be talking instead about investigating everyone who is involved in this war to initiate impeachment, court martials, and eventual prosecution under a sane DOJ. I get that the GOP isn’t doing that, but I don’t understand why the democrats aren’t. And if Dems take back the House and this is still going on, Dems should file suit in court to force the President and the Military back into compliance with the constitution.

Whether we go to war or not is not an Article II power.

Mike Johnson will say he’s been busy and knows nothing about a war.

Since the Republicans don’t want to govern, why vote for them.

I would not bother with the qualifier “about a war”.

Are the Dems all that much better? They talk a good talk, but some of this should’ve been done prior to last year when they had the chance and they didn’t do anything, then.

What could they have about a war before it happened? And yes, the Democrats are better. But we can just sit it out and see what happens if Republicans keep the House.

It should be that way, but Congress gave up most of those powers. That is why Trump can get away with this.

We’ve tried that idea of running on ‘but we’re not the GQP’ and that didn’t work so well.

I really don’t think Congress has. This wasn’t acting in self-defense. This was a war of choice and falls clearly outside of the war powers granted to the president. That’s why Bush and Obama needed to rely on the AUMF for Iraq and Afghanistan, even when fighting ISIS.

This is purely the president operating outside of our constitutional system. Congress should be worried more about impeaching Hegseth and holding hearings with the Joint Chiefs rather than worrying about passing a war powers bill to try to restrict a president who doesn’t feel constrained by law.

That is not what I said. I said, what exactly should they have done last year that would have changed the present circumstances.

I am not an expert on this by any means, but my understanding is that after 9/11 Congress allowed Presidents to have more power in regard to using the military. It was about terrorism. That does not mean that Trump is not taking advantage of the situation and using any additional powers in ways they were not intended to be used.
