i’m pretty sure there’s a cadre of unitary-executive-pushing Trump whisperers that continually assure him that in fact what the country’s founders really wanted was a single high-dominance ruler who would BE the law – and so certainly wouldn’t be bound by any old constitutions, any more than he would be bound by laws, or acts of a legislature, or courts. And I’m really sure that the appeal of that for someone of Trump’s personality and character is so high that he never hears anything else.
And sadly, I’m also pretty sure that a very high proportion of his supporters are among the people who do want such a single high-dom daddy-in-charge. An alarmingly high number of people worldwide say they’d like that. The number is generally much higher in the middle- and low-income countries.
But the U.S. is near the top of the list for such views among the high-income countries. And as income inequality increases here our numbers of authoritarian lovers are likely to swell, I would think, based on the worldwide stats, even though to a lot of us that seems like a crazy, illogical response.
Long story short – I wish his supporters were going to really care about Trump’s idiocy…but I fear that too many are taken in by his insistence that he’s their strong high-dom daddy, and they crave one of those, especially when times are hard or confusing. And nobody seems to have any really good ideas about how you fight this off…Seems that making your country and all its people more prosperous would help. But of course our high-dom ignoramus is taking us in the opposite direction.
India has proposed zero tariffs on steel, auto components and pharmaceuticals on a reciprocal basis up to a certain quantity of imports in its trade negotiations with the US, people familiar with the matter said.
Beyond this threshold, imported industrial goods would attract the regular level of duties, the people said, asking not to be identified as the discussions are private. The offer was made by Indian trade officials visiting Washington late last month to expedite negotiations on a bilateral trade deal expected by fall this year, the people said.
