Americans don’t know about the history of China, but the Chinese do, and they remember that once they caved to British demands after the Opium wars, there was no end to foreign countries making humiliating demands and tearing the country apart, it took over 150 years for the Chinese to recover their pride.
There is simply no way for Xi Jinping to be seen as submitting to Trump’s demands, he would found himself out of office in a hurry, and charged with treason too. The good thing for him is that the population are on board with resisting and JD Vance insulting remarks helped making it an issue of national honor, not just economics.
