12 Candidates, 1 Stage: What To Watch At October Debate

Tuesday’s Democratic debate, the first since the Ukraine scandal exploded and the impeachment inquiry got underway, will feature a sprawling field of 12 presidential hopefuls.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1255844

With 12 on the stage there will be nothing meaningful to watch for.

NPR’s in panic mode: Who’s going to stop Liz or Bernie? They suggest Pete B. Um, no.

I suppose it’s still early enough to, if not justify, at least excuse this many candidates on the stage at one time even though I have absolutely no idea what business Steyer and Gabbard have up there.

Frankly don’t think anyone is going to accomplish much in a crowd like that but I suppose we might hear something interesting from someone, maybe.

Maybe a candidate will predict betrayal by one of those on stage, and foretell that – before the cock crows – Peter Buttigieg will thrice deny knowing them?

What To Watch At The October Democratic Debate

Bernie Sanders as he rents and tears off his shirt and rips the stent out of his chest proclaiming: “I don’t need this! I’m fired up and ready to go!” And then does fifty pushups in under a minute to prove his point.

Yeah, I think I’ll tune back into all this around January. I just don’t think I’ll learn much right now by watching 12 people on a stage all competing to get attention.

What to Watch: Cards v Gnats at 8:00P EDT

Since the Nats will trounce the Cards again, may as well just tune into the debate.

At least the debate may have some surprises.

I expect that Warren is going to be “agressively Democratic”… and just as aggressive at hitting back at anyone who comes after her – emphasizing that she is not holding fat cat fundraisers, where wealthy donors get one-on-one time with the candidate. And on healthcare, I think she’ll counter attack by demanding any critic that they justify using tax dollars to subsidize insurance company profits – while doing next to nothing to substantially reduce health care costs.

And if Buttigieg or Klobuchar (or Gabbard, especially) come after her, I think she’ll ask them what party they are running for, given that they’ve decided to legitimize the hatred spread by Fox News.

The knives will be out for Warren from the ones who are lagging and desperate for a breakout moment. Especially from Gabbard…she seems more intent on taking out Democrats than being the presidential candidate. I expect Warren to handle it all with aplomb and not shoot back directly, but instead undercut the people attacking her with facts, it’s her go-to game. Biden will muddle through again, and likely look worse compared to Warren if she does well with everyone after her. I suspect most of them will not say anything bad to Bernie, but someone will make a passing comment about health or age (maybe about Trump) that makes people think about Bernie.

It’s also going to be a bit nonsense, there’s too many people on stage at once…I know they want to give everyone a chance to avoid supporters going rogue when their candidate loses, but it’s the point where they need to whittle down to the top 4-6 in one or two debates before the first primary.

I’ll wait for the transcript. TV is just TV no matter which show is on.

I can’t watch this debate. I don’t think I can handle it.

In one week, Trump talks to the leader of Turkey and dooms an entire ethnic group who fought and bled for us in our battle against ISIS. A battle we had won, a battle where literally hundreds of ISIS fighters were being detained.

Now ethnic cleansing and atrocities are being committed, Russia has overtaken our bases without a shot being fired, our nuclear weapons stored there are in question, ISIS is back in the game, there’s much more, but it’s too depressing to continue.

Nosferatu, I mean Rudy Giuliani, is ignoring the rule of law, along with numerous others in plain sight,

Etc. etc. etc.

And that’s in one week.

The government has been gutted and is a shadow of what it was under all of the other Presidents in the last six decades or so. This is the Republican dream come true. They have talked about this kind of small government wet dream since St. Reagan.

Instead, they will go after each other in their attempt to stand out.

I can’t watch this debate. I don’t think I can handle it.

Just dropped my 16yo daughter off at the debate. That’s right. My kid has more juice than me.
