Discussion: Why The Crazy-Long CNN Debate Solved None Of The GOP's Problems

I’m a lifelong Democrat and I agree with you that he, for me, is the best republican candidate and will stay in until the end. Actually, if by some not wished for electoral result, he should become President, policy wise, he’d be less extreme and, certainly less beholden and more independent than any of the others.

Fiorina looks good (and I['m talking about her performance, not her physical appearance) only in comparison. This is just about the sorriest group of “leaders” one can imagine.

Yeah, and if his slogans turn out to be harder to implement in practice (since he has nothing that would actually be considered an even half-assed implementation plan for anything), he’ll just declare bankruptcy and move on to the next casino deal.

Democrats are jumping for joy today. Now there will be plenty of clips of the potential GOP candidate whizzing on about war and war and, did I mention, war in the Middle East with American combat boots all over the place. Only two of the 14 came out strongly against boots on the ground in the ME (If I remember correctly) and that would be Paul Rand and Ben Carson. My impression is that their likely candidate is going to have to deal with “war, war, war” on the real campaign trail and Daddy McCain certainly had a lot of trouble with his “war, war, war” message in the general election.

I understand the desire to treat this like a horse race. But with all of the “who won and who lost”, who got in a good punch, etc., everyone seems to be losing sight of the most salient thing coming out of this debate–they all lie! And they lie repeatedly. It’s absolutely astonishing how many false statements are made by these folks. Now, I’ll grant that in some instances, the candidates might not know they’re lying, and just may be misinformed, but that’s not really an excuse and, in any event, I believe they know better. Cruz in particular is just shameless in his false assertions. With Trump, it’s not always clear whether he realizes it or not. Sometimes, it’s obvious that he’s lying–the fact that he sought a license for a casino in Florida seems to be a matter of public record. But much of the time, it seems like he just doesn’t care whether he’s telling the truth or not, he just says whatever seems convenient or to get a reaction at the time.

Well, for what it’s worth, the seven Lincoln-Douglas debates lasted 3 hours a shot, with one candidate speaking for 60 minutes, then the other 90 minutes, then the first speaker was allowed a 30 minute rejoinder. The two alternated who spoke first for debate to debate.

Well the personal highlight for me was my better half’s mother and her boyfriend (Arizona conservatives) who were in town visiting who insisted they come over to watch the debate because the house they are staying in didn’t have cable.

Towards the end they said to each other (well, looks like we have nobody to vote for in this election).

Works for me.

The joint bitch-slap session… er, presser… er, debate had more in common with a visit to Monty Python’s Argument Clinic than with an argument. It was a lot of “nuh-uh”, “are-too”, “am not”, and “so’s your brother” with some “me, too!” tossed in for spice and precious little in the way of informed discussion about important issues.

I personally think Rubio helped himself last night, and will be the beneficiary if Trump implodes. Fiorina might but I think Rubio is the more obvious choice for the anti-Trump GOPers to move towards.

You may be right, but I think that depends heavily on how strong anti-establishmentarianism is running in the Republican primary electorate. Marco has an “insider” problem in that regard, and it’s made worse by his participation in the so-called Gang of Eight immigration deal that passed the Senate. Yes, he’s now disavowed it as unworkable but it still has his fingerprints all over it.

Monsters is pretty much the best discription for them. They really have no redeeming attributes for our country. When Carly “I’ll wreck one of America’s greatest tech companies because I’m Stupid” Fiorina comes off as a plus person in this debate, well, they got nothin.

I’m sure Ed would go for your metaphor as well as his own.

Fiorina made a good impression by serial total lies about Planned Parenthood, plus a call for a couple of trillion dollars of that ever popular military equipment and actions.

He will be SO GREAT at everything YOUR HEAD WILL SPIN.

Hardly any critical analysis generated by the liberal or even beltway press makes its way through the conservative media membrane. Fox and its hate radio allies will filter or spin every iota of bad press before it reaches the GOP rubes.
