Discussion for article #246500
Trump’s answers and emphatically-stated memes are confusing – but so is nearly everything the others say as well. Planned Parenthood–like any other healthcare provider–gets paid for services provided to Medicaid recipients and anyone with a government-funded healthcare plan, such as Medicare or a government employee’s healthcare plan (such as Blue Cross, for example). Since the federal government does not pay for abortions (except in some cases of rape, incest or the mother’s health), no federal monies are paid to PP for abortions.
Well, thanks for pointing that out. This has been the case for decades. I do appreciate at least one reporter getting this right.
But here’s the key thing Trump misses: The federal Hyde Amendment blocks Planned Parenthood – or any one other entity – from using taxpayer money for abortions, with the exception of rape, incest and life of the mother. It is named for the late Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL).
its weird how this part has to be mentioned again and again and again and again and again
I just have to love the fact that this amendment was sponsored by Henry Hyde “The Salami”, a man who had his own share of sexual escapades while in office.
Trump’s statement is indicative of his shallow approach to everything he does. He hasn’t got the 1st clue how government works at all, not just the Hyde Amendment. He can rouse the rubes but they don’t require any actual thought to rouse. Trump is veneer in business too. He lends his name to a hotel. He doesn’t “own” it but he gets paid very well for lending his name…
Trump would approach all of governing like we see in this comment and fail miserably and we would pay the price.
It’s not clear what Trump is saying – whether he would just not find the abortion part or whether he is saying that because there is an abortion part he would not fund the whole thing.
He’s clearly the only person on the stage who has at all processed the fact that millions of women have been helped by Planned Parenthood and find the attacks on it absurd.
Yes, but why are taxpayers subsidizing the sale of aborted baby parts? Answer the question!!! Only I get to talk!
Trump’s not stupid, but here’s the thing: he knows how stupid people talk and think and does a perfect rendition. And that’s why all the stupid people love him. If you define stupid people as those one-half standard deviation below the mean, that still leaves 30% or so of the population to vote for him. Which is scary. And his base.
This is what we’ll get with a Trump Presidency: “Yeah, I like it. It helps millions, but it has to go. Sorry. Get over it.”
What else could he apply this to?
“Look, college is great. I had a great time there. Learned a lot. But we need to close a few hundred of them. They got to go.”
“Libraries offer a lot of great programs, especially for the kids, but we’ve got to get rid of them.”
“Poor people need to eat. Food is expensive. But WIC and these other programs–gotta go.”
I wonder how many European countries will close their borders to Americans when this nightmare becomes a reality.
Well, in his defense, his primary base is stupid. All they heard was “blah blah blah DEFUND blah blah PLANNED PARENTHOOD”. It’s starting to sound like he’s already pivoting to a general election position on PP, where he might know that supporters of PP are already aware of the Hyde Amendment. I might be giving him too much credit for this, but it does seem calculated to me.
Hyde Amendment, named for Henry Hyde, one of the great right-wing chasers of Bill Clinton’s penis during the madness of the 90s. And, it turned out, a typical GOP hypocritical piece of shit. Hyde had an extramarital affair with a woman who was also married, which caused her marriage to break up. Between him and Newt, it was truly a stellar bunch going after Bill Clinton for that earth-shattering blowie.
"As it has multiple times on the campaign trail . . . "
According to the prepositional phrase Tierney uses to open her article, Trump can no longer be described by a gender-specific pronoun. That works fine for me. In fact, I’d take the “it” one step further to suggest that Trump is not even human.
[Grammar note: I realize that Ms. Sneed is indicating “Trump’s explanation,” rather than Trump himself, but the lede is so remarkably clunky that it begs for ridicule.]
He probably doesn’t know that they are not federally funded because abortion politics was not his business before he started running for president. His opponents aren’t ignorant however. They know federal funds are not used to pay for abortions at PP. Defunding PP is something that riles up the low information GOP base though so they have no problem being dishonest about that.
Trump does not “get” how anything works, the military, healthcare, The Constitution, anything to
do with public policy, and government. He is so ignorant it’s scary.
Trump does not know much of anything. Let us not forget that the hypocrite Henry Hyde insisted on an abortion for someone he impregnated back in the 70’s or 80’s, yet his infamous amendment applies to women to this day. Hmm, I wonder if there are any abortions in Trump’s past, considering what a playboy he was???
Nah , he knows about it but doesn’t want to acknowledge it .
I don’t think Trump misses the point at all, nor do Republicans generally. The Hyde amendment was a political compromise that they no longer accept; they see it as merely enabling PP and other organizations getting public funds who continue to provide abortion services. The point of the attack on PP has always been to pressure the organization to get out of the abortion business. As long as Roe v. Wade continues to protect against banning first trimester abortions, the anti-abortion movement has been trying to create a de facto ban by various tactics, including picketing/protesting, legislation severely restricting access and, in the case of PP, cutting off public funds to the organization.
Calling these folks stupid because they supposedly don’t understand how the Hyde Amendment solves the problem just completely misses the point of what’s going on here.
The first at of government will be to paint the white house in golden color and put mirrored windows.
Trumps lack of knowledge on this subject is stunning. Last week Chuck Todd in an interview with Trump asked him a f8llow up question on the subject (shocking) when he said, Mr Trump, if none of the funding was going towards abortions would that change your view on funding planned parent hood?
Trump responded that it would, but as long as planned. Parenthood is involved in abortions I wont fund them. So Todd all but took his nose and shoved it into the facts, buts Trump was too dense to grasp the concept. He does not have a clue. And if he does he is using this nswer to avoid saying he would support Planned arent hood which would cost him conservative votes.
