Discussion: L.L. Bean On Defensive After Linda Bean's Political Donation To Donald Trump

Good. Be upset. That’s the point of a boycott.

And, no, it is not OK for you to keep a board member who makes such donations. It’s legal, and you can di it if you want. But I don’t have to buy anything from you while you accept it.

That’s the point of a boycott. To make the point that an action is unacceptable.

In a perfect world she might get the sort of treatment as the owner of a certain Dairy Queen in Zion, Illinois.

Karma, you know.

No. The action is illegal. She made the donation to the PAC that exceeded the limit by law. The limit is I believe $5,000.00 in a calendar year. She exceeded that by $55,000.00. That ain’t chump change. That’s the point.

Several generations of my family have been loyal LL Bean customers. I have family in Maine and the Bean store in Freeport is usually one of the stops I make when I visit the state. I called and emailed to let them know that as long as they have board members who support dump, they will be boycotted. Linda Bean makes money when I buy their products and then funnels money to trump.

Having her on the board is legal.

While it’s legal to have her on the board, it doesn’t seem wise to have someone on the board who can’t determine the difference between what’s legal and what she wants to do. Or (more likely) doesn’t care.

My personal problem with Bean is that they have a board member who is willing to aggressively support a party whose Federal platform includes public land divestiture. I believe that that’s a position that’s inconsistent with the mission of an ‘outdoor retailer’.

Public lands are in the cross-hairs these days, and LLBean will not get my business until and unless they understand and correct that inconsistency.

Here’s what ‘consistency’ looks like: http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/4798906-155/op-ed-time-for-outdoor-retailers-to

Did you read my first post in this thread?

I did - and gave it a ‘like’. What’s your point?

You seemed to be telling me the same points I had already made. No harm, just asking.

Not a problem. The larger issue (to me, anyway), is that LLBean’s board should wholeheartedly support public lands for the benefit of recreation. They are, after all, an outdoor retailer. Ms Bean’s political activities appear to suggest that she believes otherwise.

Without public lands with outdoor recreation opportunities, outdoor retailers would just be clothing stores.
