OT: Just to say that the earthquake here in Ridgecrest was fairly typical for the area. The Garlock fault runs just to the south, intersecting with a number of smaller faults. Oops, there was another small aftershock! Situation is “fluid.” Nearly all the houses are single-story without basements so its mostly bookshelves and a bit of glass.
Note: By typical, I just mean this is how it feels in when a lateral strike-slip fault moves. Lots of side to side and a bit of up and down. What is unnerving is that we don’t usually perceive the ground under us heaving. Strength-wise this was the biggest in the immediate area for many years. What would really be unusual would be a volcanic eruption at the northwest or southwest ends of the Indian Wells Valley. It’s possible.

For those of you who listen to podcasts, I highly recommend Ezra Klein’s latest about white panic. He goes into great detail with his guest about the roots and evolution of the evangelical movement. By the end, they present some really sobering statistics about how these people truly view us as an existential threat to their way of life. I do not see how the parties can ever work together again … as much as people might claim to want it. The enmity runs too deep, it’s too historical, and, although we all know the reasons and who’s to blame, it’s quite disheartening.
