During a press conference on Friday, Venema told reporters that authorities are considering investigating the incident as a hate crime.
Whatever you do, do not introduce evidence, call fact witnesses or appeal to expert testimony if this comes to trial. Jurists hate when you do that here in America; especially the non-impartial ones who already know that the poor white lady driver is innocent.

Do you honestly think this dogwhistle idea is certainly or even probably true? If a person says something offensive and I say “There’s no call for that kind of talk,” I’m not sneakily trying to say there is, in fact, call for other types of offensive talk so just take it down a notch, please. I think about 999,999 times out of a million it’s just a perfectly straightforward and innocent way to frame a condemnation.

Yeah, but law enforcement has to be cautious. If anyone starts saying she’s guilty of a hate crime, then the jury is ‘poisoned’ and justice gets that much harder to obtain.

Not dragging on you either but it’s reasonable to assume this is a person with poor impulse control because she’s plastered and maybe a dual diagnosis going on with some sort of mental illness into the mix. We have always had a lot of hard-core racists walking around, and more to the point driving around, but it was rare to see one of them jump the sidewalk and run down a person of the wrong background, if only because they didn’t want to deal with the inconvenient paperwork afterward, not to mention the charges, trials, incarceration etc. Stochastic terrorism happens at the margins; it nudges already unstable people toward a particular type of target as far as I know. It’s not like your normal-ass car-washing lawn-cutting neighbors suddenly start jumping up and killing people spontaneously and independently.
