Wisconsin Now Has 40 Election-Related COVID Cases

Keep in mind his explanation for why he was wearing that - all poll workers were required to wear it and he claimed that’s what he was doing, that it was the only reason he was wearing it. Uh huh. Sure. Gotcha.

Well if they test everyone who stood in line to vote and only saw 40 cases so far would be a sign that there’s negligible risk for voting in person. If they’re not testing everyone then those 40 plus case could just be the tip of the ice berg.

Again, see the point that you can’t actually link any of the cases to it. They could have been exposed at the grocery store for all we know, there’s no way to link community spread of this.

You’re more likely to die in a car accident on your way to cast a ballot. And much more likely to catch it pawing through crowds to get the last roll of toilet paper.

Our elections are a key part of our democracy. With the games the republicans are playing this election, blocking moves to make mail-in the standard, this is a patently good-news story that people can be confident that going to vote will not put them at greater risk than any other allowed activity, certainly less than some, and thus there is no reason to be cancelling or postponing elections.

O my god - a car wreck on the way to vote?

Yeah we have car wrecks and we haven’t banned cars, you are so right.

Yep.

You’re missing the point.

IF there was an actual risk factor, we’d see a LOT more than 40 possible cases out of 440,000 people who went to polls. Add to that the simple fact that you cannot establish, in community spread, who infected who when. Those 40 cases, in all likelihood, picked it up somewhere during their regular lives, not necessarily even at the polls.

Yes, the test ordered by the Supremes was highly unethical, but it worked to prove that it’s not a risk to hold in-person voting.

Voting is never going to be a zero-risk thing. You could catch the flu there, but we’ve never cancelled for that. And we just had a mass experiment that serves as rather solid proof that you’re not going to catch Covid-19 there, either.

The US has now passed the ONE MILLION confirmed Covid cases, one million, unbelievable.

If it’s still a concern in November (highly likely in my estimation), then perhaps an effort should be mounted to require, and provide masks for those voting, instead of those stupid “I voted!” stickers. Hell, the masks could include the message for all that. @tena

Thanks, you’re my Wisconsin go-to. I had a phone call with someone in Barron this am. She said everything is completely normal there, except for her having two kids in grade school who don’t do any schooling at home and are driving her nuts. All the kids get pass/fail for the year. And Menards is packed full every day, just like it was “Black Friday Sales.” That’s my Northern Wisconsin!

Hey, I’m all for all protective measures and maximum absentee/mail-in balloting.

It’s just seeing the results here, bit comforting knowing that we’ve got pretty solid data that the risk of in-person voting is negligible. Also will be a key data point if certain republicans start raising the idea of delaying elections for nefarious reasons.

And masks/gloves shouldn’t be an issue by November, as we’re already seeing the supply chain picking up there, it’ll be a flood of stuff around by then.

Here in Texas the ACLU is suing for a mail in election and that’s what I think every state should be doing.

@castor_troy - no I didn’t miss the point - you made a risk assessment that I think is totally spurious.

o/t I made the mistake of reading the YouTube comments for Gov. Newsom’s presser. Yuck. Think I need some bleach!

I’m not sure there’s time to get all the assholes on board for mail-in ballots, so I’m thinking of a way to keep as many people safe and with the program as possible. TBH I’ve never absentee voted and it seems just ever so slightly weird to me, but whatever it takes. I’ll crawl naked over flaming acid-dipped broken glass to vote.

It’s simple maths. 440,000 voters. 40 cases which may or may not have come from that. That’s 0.009%.

By contrast, on the TR, ~800 cases out of 4500, that’s an 18% hit rate.

New York City is looking at data suggesting that up to 25% of their folks have had the virus at some point.

Maths say that that 40 cases-- which we can’t even link to the polls, remember-- is not in line with any sort of increased exposure due to participating.

Not sure what’s spurious about data. The data are what they are. If there was even a 1% chance of catching it, we’d have seen over 4,000 cases.

If you can go to the grocery store every couple of weeks, you can certainly go to the polls one time.

I agree with all of your sentiments. Oregon votes by mail. Canada votes by mail. India votes by mail. One would think we could get it together and get it done.

Safely. As it is, in Texas everyone over 65 automatically gets an absentee ballot in the mail - you can use it or throw it away. It’s already assigned and ready to be mailed. I don’t know how many Texans that is, but I’m sure it’s a good many who already are set up.

Once I started voting absentee, I never quit. We now have permanent vote by mail status in California, which anyone can request and some folks, living rurally, get automatically. It is so very nice to have a ballot for several days, and be able to do my research. But what I like the most is to have time to make sure I have it filled out right, without being in a hurry, trying to get it done for the next person to vote.

I have lost track of how long I have voted by mail in AZ, but it is great and definitely the best way to vote. It takes a long time to research all of the judges they stick on our ballots.
