Why Won’t Manchin, Sinema Endorse The Reconciliation Framework?

These bills, if we were in the previous universe that trump dragged us out of, these bills woulda been passed last summer fer g*d’s sake.
I sometimes think SinaManchin does what he/she does… well … it’s just to annoy everybody. The press, TV media, and voters, especially democrats.
If I were Biden I would have had the two of them over to the Oval Office for a “chat” in which they’d have their heads handed to them on a plate. I’d tell them reelection should be considered dead meat. And the two of them would be replaced by actual democrats.
I know, it’s just a dream

They are both narcissists - entitled to what they want and speak out of both sides of their mouth.

Good thing for Sinema that Arizona is not going through a historic drought.

Oh wait, it is. Maybe money for water reclamation plants or ground water recharge or desal in CA. to reduce the demand on the Colorado River would help her constituents.

Oh well.

Or they’re still hoping to get the BIF and fuck everyone on the reconciliation bill.

Having done a bit of negotiation in my time, I can tell you that’s the negotiating signal they’d be sending if it was me, whether or not its their intent or not, and I’d be telling the mediator we’re ready to walk away because of it.

That they won’t means they’re personally bent. In whatever way

They want it to fail

Regardless of the fact that Manchin and Sinema are attention whores, the bipartisan bill means more to them than to any other members of Congress. They have staked their whole methodology on bipartisanship. They can have both bills or neither. They can’t stand that idea, but that’s the way it is.

((( major belly laugh))) the last thing Sinema thinks about are we folk in Arizona. She doesn’t spend any thought on us.I do not see a way she could get reelected. Goobers see her as a democrat lefty and AZ democrats are pissed at her in a major way. That’s 2/3rds of the electorate right there.

I’m damn glad Biden was able to rush the coronavirus relief package through back in March. If he hadn’t, we’d still be discussing it due to “reasons.”

That’s what I’m seeing now. The Democratic Party is taking serious damage because of Manchin and Sinema’s “reasons.”

I know it is not realistic, but part of me wishes in constructing these bills that the Dems would have said to red state Senators “If you want money in the bill for your state you will get on board, otherwise we will let your voters know you didn’t think providing them support and opportunity by making sure none of the money in these bills goes to red states, play ball or watch, those are your choices”

IMO there is a certain logic to it, I know that reality and my logic rarely agree. But that’s my problem.

She’s needy, he’s greedy.

Actually there is an easy way to do that, and many Federal programs use it. Make the program a joint Federal/State program. Have the Feds put up 80 - 90 % percent of the cost and the State put up the remainder. If the State doesn’t want to participate they won’t put any money up.

If we’re able to take 2-3 Senate seats in 2022, I want Sinema stripped of all her committee assignments and banished to the Utah legislature.

Can the House start cutting things out of the BIF? Say barring diversion of H2O from the Colorado River?

For every.percentage cut from BBB cut a like percentage from BIF?

She very likely cannot get reelected…

Kyrsten, if we agree to have the face of the Statue of Liberty changed to your face, would you vote “Yes”?

Pretty please?

I thought Manchin wasn’t running again anyway?

Because it is $1.75 trillion in spending.

Please understand this. Progressives and liberals see creating social programs, increasing taxes - or creating new ones - and spending money on things other than policing and defense as a victory. Moderates and conservatives? Not so much. At best a moderate will go along with it if pressured by the party but don’t expect them to vigorously endorse it or do a celebration dance as if it represents this great victory that they are going to claim for themselves.

The people who drove this thing would demand this spending even if the House, Senate and President were controlled by the GOP. They would denounce the GOP as enemies of the elderly and children, murderers of POC and destroyers of the environment and planet for not going along. Sinema, Manchin and a number of other Democrats that are clearly just along for the ride meanwhile wouldn’t say a peep to pressure the GOP into acting on policy issues that they really don’t care much about one way or another and may even in fact oppose.

This is why Biden was the perfect guy to get this done. Because in a previous era, he was a moderate Democrat who wouldn’t have even allowed himself to be photographed with the Progressive Caucus. Even though he has now obviously moved to the left, his understanding their mindset is why he was able to persuade them to preserve as much of the deal as possible when a bunch of progressives - including writers and commenters on this very blog - were demanding insane pressure tactics like threatening DoJ investigations of corruption or going after business interests. Of course not realizing that in addition to being potentially illegal in and of itself would never have worked in a million years. Sinema and especially Manchin would have simply switched parties - or resigned and allow their Republican governors to appoint Republican replacements - instead of changing their votes in response to bully tactics.

So yes, Manchin and Sinema are going to vote for this bill. No, they aren’t happy about it. And no, they aren’t going to give the progressives and liberals that have spent the past 6+ months verbally assaulting them, harassing them, accusing them of being bigots etc. the satisfaction. They certainly aren’t going to say “how high” when you guys say “jump” and I don’t blame them. They will do it out of respect for Biden, who they still respect and like. Had Biden listened to you guys and used the tactics that you demanded, he would be just another person that they would be gleefully poking in the eye right now.

Remember the old saying, “politics is show biz for ugly people”?
Not to imply anything about their looks, but I think the dynamic is the same. Maybe “people who want attention but have had trouble getting enough of it until now.”

Actually, they’ll do it because Biden informed each during their one-on-one that Hillary had already offered to Epstein them, and he’s been considering that offer and the right vote may or may not sway his ultimate decision.
